Heatwave Grips France and Europe; Over 1,000 Deaths Reported Amid AC Shortages

EU nations are reeling from an intense heatwave with France especially hard-hit as temperatures soar between 35°C and 40°C in several countries. France has already seen over 1,000 deaths in the heatwave and older people are particularly vulnerable to heat‑related illnesses.

To compound the problem, cooling appliances are out of stock and have been scarce. Air conditioners, coolers and fans are in high demand and prices are skyrocketing. And in some places, the cost of one basic fan (as seen in Pune) is ₹70,000, and residents are in desperate need of a fan to handle the heat. Retailers say the store stocks are going to run out fast, leaving many families without relief.

French officials and the European Union have appealed to citizens to limit their use of air conditioning in order to “protect the climate.” In fact, excessive use of AC at home can even result in fines in some EU countries.

And the impact of the extreme heat extends far beyond the homes. There have been problems on rail services, too, because of overheated tracks and equipment failures and trains are delayed. Power demand is high, and agriculture has been affected by parched fields and low crop yields. Lower river levels have also affected shipping routes and that has been a major economic burden.

Health officials say the situation could only get worse if temperatures continue to rise. Poor and vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions are at risk of dehydration, heatstroke and more. Hospitals in France and other countries are reporting more admissions due to heat-related illnesses.

Finally, the heatwave hitting France and Europe shows the growing problem of climate extremes. At times of boiling temperatures, increasing health risks and economic disruption, the crisis calls for immediate relief measures and long‑term climate resilience strategies. As household incomes are down with shortages and prices of cooling appliances are going up, climate protection and human survival is at an all-time high.
