Diplomatic engagements go beyond official conversations, and symbolic gifts can be a potent source for strengthening relationships. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just given Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a series of gifts that married humor, legacy and cultural pride.
Among them were Melody toffees, a playful allusion to the viral nickname “Melodi” that quickly prompted social media firestorm. He also gave a Shirui Lily silk shawl from Manipur, symbolizing Northeast India’s craftsmanship and floral abundance; and a Muga silk shawl from Assam to epitomize grace, as well as handloom splendor, in India.
Modi also invited her to come see India, and Meloni graciously agreed. The question when she approaches India is: What should PM Modi get her next time? For something larger, we could choose a Banarasi silk saree that tells of India’s ever-timeless textile craftsmanship and its rich culture.
But a different hand-made Karnataka sandalwood idol would represent purity and spirituality that is linked to India’s deep roots. A Tanjore painting or miniature version of the Konark Sun Temple would highlight India’s cultural and architectural heritage while allowing observers a preview of the country’s vast grandeur.
A more elegant item I would consider would be a Darjeeling tea hamper, which would promote India on the global arena with quality teas and good hospitality. And the gift would also reinforce some diplomatic warmth, not just reflect India’s diversity.
They would combine creativity with tradition and symbolism, filling Meloni’s visit with movements that would speak to them on an emotional and political level. Using items that reflect India’s heritage, PM Modi will strengthen her cultural diplomacy with Italy and leave a lasting impression on Italian leadership.
