US Strike on Iran Imminent? Pete Hegseth Says Trump is 'Ready'

Tension in the Middle East has reached a fever pitch after a high-stakes Cabinet meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2026. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth issued a direct and "chilling" warning to Tehran, asserting that the United States is fully prepared to take military action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It would come at a moment of huge US naval forces, which President Donald Trump has called a “beautiful armada” moving into striking range of the Iranian coast.

“He Means Business”: Hegseth’s Stark Warning

Standing alongside President Trump, Hegseth reiterated that the "War Department" (the administration’s preferred term for the Pentagon) is running a zero-tolerance policy over Iran’s nuclear enrichment. “When President Trump said, ‘We’re not getting a nuclear Iran,’ he meant it. We will be prepared to deliver whatever this president expects of the War Department.” - Pete Hegseth.

To emphasize American toughness, Hegseth cited the recent U.S.-led operations on Jan. 3 in Venezuela to capture Nicolás Maduro. He called it a message to “every capital around the world” that the current administration is prepared to arm its “warriors” to carry out sophisticated, high-stakes missions.

The “Massive Armada” and Operation Midnight Hammer

The military buildup focuses on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group. President Trump on Wednesday took to Truth Social to warn that this fleet is “larger and more ready” than the one that was at the heart of the Venezuela operation. The Ultimatum: Trump has called on Iran to "come to the table" to "bring about a complete abandonment of nuclear enrichment," warning that "time is running out."

The Precedent: The administration often references Operation Midnight Hammer, the airstrikes that reportedly “obliterated” three Iranian nuclear sites in June 2025 to warn that the “next attack will be far worse.”

Global Responses and Escalation Threats

As the US maintains a "maximum pressure" posture, its regional allies have been on edge: Turkey, Oman, and Qatar are said to be racing to iron out a last-minute diplomatic intervention before a war that could engulf the entire region. And Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi replied with equal defiance, saying that Iran’s armed forces are "prepared-with their fingers on the trigger-to immediately and powerfully respond to ANY aggression."

Strategic Objectives: Strikes Or Regime Change?

Analysts don’t see eye to eye on whether the United States is conducting targeted “surgical” strikes on rebuilt nuclear infrastructure or a more expansive “decapitation strike” against the Iranian leadership. The Trump team thinks it may be that targeting high-ranking officials could spark the civil unrest that’s been brewing for months following violent crackdowns on protesters earlier this winter.
