A devastating fire broke out at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, early Monday morning, killing at least 10 patients and injuring several others in one of the deadliest hospital incidents in the state in recent years.
According to officials, the fire erupted in the Trauma Care Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital during the early hours, triggering panic among patients, attendants, and hospital staff. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as flames and thick smoke spread inside the critical care ward where several seriously ill patients were undergoing treatment.
Authorities confirmed that 10 patients lost their lives, while at least 11 hospital staff members suffered burn injuries while attempting to rescue those trapped in the ICU. The injured staff were reportedly hurt during the evacuation efforts as they tried to move patients to safer areas.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after battling it for nearly half an hour. Meanwhile, many patients were quickly shifted to other wards and nearby hospitals to prevent further casualties.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have started between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., though the exact cause is still under investigation. Authorities suspect a possible electrical short circuit inside the trauma care unit, but officials say the final cause will be determined only after a detailed probe.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and confirmed the deaths. He also visited the hospital to assess the situation and ensure proper treatment for the injured. The state government has ordered an investigation into the incident and directed authorities to review fire safety systems in major hospitals.
