Aadhaar App Hits 3.1 Crore Downloads, 40 Lakh Users Update Mobile Numbers

The Aadhaar mobile application has crossed 3.1 crore downloads within 5 months of launch, and this is the first time that this app is being used to provide digital identity services in India. The rapid adoption shows that the public is more comfortable with technology and citizen-oriented digital services.

According to the data released by the government, nearly 40 lakh Aadhaar holders have updated their registered mobile numbers using the new Aadhaar app. Also, around 8.5 lakh users have updated their addresses through the platform, reducing the need to visit Aadhaar service centres.

The Aadhaar app, developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is available for Android and iOS. Created with a privacy-first approach, it lets users of Aadhaar numbers safely carry, share, and verify their identity from their smartphones.

The growing adoption, officials said, is evidence of citizens’ trust in the app to provide essential Aadhaar-related services as quickly as possible. Since it was launched on September 10th, the app has been an important tool in India’s continuing digital transformation on a time scale of one day to another, allowing users to access identity-related services daily.

One of the most popular features of the app is that it allows us to update Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers and addresses online. Users used to have to go to Aadhaar Seva Kendras for such changes. Now, the app has simplified these processes for millions of people.

The Aadhaar app also has several advanced features to enhance users’ convenience and security. These include biometric lock and unlock with a single click in the app, face authentication for proof of presence, authentication history tracking, and a QR code-based editable contact card that lets users share contact details digitally instead of simply using visiting cards.

Also, users can download their e-Aadhaar, book appointments online for Aadhaar Seva Kendras, and access a wide variety of identity verification services through the application. The app is increasingly used for practical day-to-day activities like hotel check-ins, visitor management systems, hospital admissions, event entry verification, and identity verification for gig workers and service providers.

The government has also been expanding the ecosystem around offline verification of Aadhaar. More than 100 entities have now been added to Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs) to support secure, consent-based, and paperless identity verification without the need for real-time access to Aadhaar databases. This is expected to enhance privacy protections and make verification quicker.

The Aadhaar app's growth from 2.1 crore downloads in three months to more than 3.1 crore downloads in 5 months is a testament to the increasing acceptance of digital public infrastructure in India. If more services are available on mobile platforms, then the Aadhaar app will play a larger role in enabling identity management, which in turn would help to improve digital governance in the country.

With millions of Indians already using the platform for updates and verification services, the Aadhaar app has become one of the fastest-growing government-backed digital applications in India, furthering India’s push toward a seamless and paperless digital ecosystem.
