Andhra Pradesh Health Department has confirmed four cases of the Omicron RF.5 variant of COVID-19 in Kadapa district, with the state government stepping up surveillance and hospitals being told to be prepared for any possible increase in infections.
The announcement was made by Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav on Saturday, July 18, after genomic sequencing confirmed the presence of the new Omicron sub-variant in samples collected from COVID-19-positive patients.
Variant Confirmed Through Genomic Testing
According to the health minister, the positive samples from Kadapa have been sent to a virology laboratory in Pune for genomic analysis. The laboratory confirmed that all four samples belonged to the Omicron RF.5 variant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron strain under international surveillance.
As health authorities explained, the detection was made through routine genomic surveillance that is done to identify emerging variants and assess their spread.
Hospitals Asked to Stay Prepared
After the confirmation, the state government told hospitals and healthcare facilities to be alert and have enough preparedness as appropriate.
Officials have asked medical institutions to:
- Monitor patients with COVID-19 symptoms closely.
- Maintain sufficient stocks of essential medicines and medical supplies.
- Deploy isolation facilities and oxygen support systems if needed.
- Continue surveillance and timely reporting of new cases.
The Health Department said that the measures are precautionary and meant to make us ready and not to indicate a public health emergency.
WHO Monitoring RF.5 Variant
Dr. Vishnuvardhan, director of Medical Education, said the World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the RF.5 variant as part of the global surveillance of COVID-19 mutations.
Health officials mentioned that RF.5 has been reported in Singapore and some Southeast Asian countries, where it is found in relatively greater numbers. Scientists said we still need genomic surveillance to understand its transmission patterns and public health impact.
No Cause for Panic
Andhra Pradesh Health Department has advised the public not to panic because the detection of new variants is a routine outcome of continuous genomic monitoring.
People should be cautious and take basic preventive steps, especially those who are elderly and have underlying health issues or weakened immune systems.
Residents are encouraged to:
Practice good hand hygiene.
- Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated places if you have respiratory symptoms.
- Seek medical advice if they continue to have fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
- Stay updated with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters.
Surveillance Intensified
Health officials have intensified surveillance across the state to identify any additional cases of the RF.5 variant. Genomic sequencing for selected positive samples will continue as part of India’s effort to detect emerging variants at an early stage.
The Health Department also confirmed that in coordination with national health agencies, it is monitoring the situation and responding quickly if necessary.
Although this finding of the RF.5 variant has made us more prepared for it, officials said that at this point in time, it is not clear if widespread transmission is already known in Andhra Pradesh. Citizens are advised to stay alert, follow public health guidance, and rely on official updates rather than misinformation.
