Bangladesh has taken steps to seek an Interpol Red Notice for former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed in the wake of allegations of corruption, misuse of power and financial wrongdoing by the former army chief as a result of corruption and financial wrongdoing as more allegations of corruption, abuse of power and financial fraud are made in his time as the senior military official.
The former senior military official has been under fire for the past few years regarding his public service and relations with family members.
The move comes on the heels of the ongoing investigation by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission into allegations against Aziz Ahmed. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, an investigation is also underway into abuse of power, corruption, irregularity, money laundering and asset acquisition beyond the sources of income in Aziz’s name and family members.
Money transferred abroad and property and business interests in several countries are also being referred to, they also alleged.
The request for global police cooperation is significant because an Interpol Red Notice is generally used when a country needs help to locate a suspect in the country that is wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence. But a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant, Interpol explains. So we ask the world to find and arrest an individual for an extradition or other legal process and the laws of each country can determine the effect of the notice.
Aziz Ahmed was Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh until retiring in June 2021. In May 2024, the United States first imposed sanctions against him under a provision that targets people who are involved in corruption. He was accused by the U.S. State Department in the media of interfering with the public business process; he was accused of helping his brother to escape any responsibility for criminal activity and of having been involved in unlawful military contract awards and bribery in government appointments.
The US designation also imposed restrictions on the entry of Aziz and his immediate family members to the United States.
Washington said it was taking action to strengthen the country’s commitment to democratic institutions and to the rule of law in Bangladesh. But Aziz denied the allegations and described the US action as surprising, according to Bangladeshi media at the time.
And so the latest development is just the latest chapter in a long-standing dispute over the former army chief. The allegations against him are for the legal authorities and courts to decide. An investigation or request for international cooperation does not constitute guilt and anyone being accused of guilt is entitled to due process under the law.
If Bangladesh formally submits a Red Notice request, Interpol will review the application under its rules before deciding whether it meets the organisation's requirements. Interpol says requests are examined by a specialised task force that considers information provided by the requesting country, other member countries and available open-source information. Notices that don't meet Interpol's constitution and rules can be rejected or cancelled.
It also shows that an Interpol request should not be taken as an immediate international arrest order by default. Even when a Red Notice is issued, individual countries have their own internal laws to consider when they decide to provisionally detain a person. Extradition, when pursued, is a legal and diplomatic process that can involve courts and government authorities in the country where the individual is actually located.
The move has been noticed in Bangladesh as authorities have increasingly relied on international cooperation in cases of people outside the country’s jurisdiction, and so in recent years the country’s police chief Benazir Ahmed’s case is a prime example of how such mechanisms work. Bangladesh sought an Interpol Red Notice against Benazir, which was issued in April 2025, and UAE authorities subsequently arrested him in June 2026.
Aziz Ahmed’s next step will depend on the progress of the Bangladeshi investigation, any court proceedings and the outcome of Interpol’s review if a formal request is made to the law enforcement agency. Authorities would also need to follow the appropriate procedures for any further extradition or legal action.
The development has broader implications for Bangladesh's attempts to catch alleged financial criminals and corruption across borders.
Investigation of assets, financial transactions, or business interests in multiple countries can need cooperation between law-enforcement and financial authorities in different countries. International mechanisms like Interpol notices can facilitate communication, but they do not replace national judicial procedures.
So the investigation will be ongoing, whether Bangladesh is able to secure an Interpol Red Notice or not, and where legal actions will be taken. The case also underscores the difference between allegations, investigations and convictions. The allegations against Aziz Ahmed are allegations until a competent court determines his guilt and charges are made.
The request is the latest chapter in Bangladesh's former army chief’s legal scrutiny. The next step in the investigation could also determine the direction of the investigation and whether there will be further legal action.
