Delhi’s long awaited Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor will open for public today, September 29, with a new signal-free way of connecting East Delhi with the southern part of the city.
The route is meant to improve traffic flow between Mayur Vihar Phase I, Sarai Kale Khan, AIIMS and other key parts of South Delhi.
Phase 3 connects Mayur Vihar Phase I to Sarai Kale Khan and integrates with the existing Barapullah network. Once fully operational, the combined corridor will provide a largely uninterrupted route for motorists travelling between East Delhi, Central Delhi and South Delhi.
Barapullah Phase-3 New Route
The new elevated stretch is designed for direct connection from Mayur Vihar Phase I to Sarai Kale Khan. From there commuters can access AIIMS and other areas in South Delhi through the existing road network.
The project is especially important for commuters from East Delhi and Noida to South Delhi. There are reports that the new corridor will bypass several busy junctions and reduce dependence on congested stretches around the DND Flyway, Ring Road and Sarai Kale Khan.
Travel Time: 40 Minutes to Around 15 Minutes
One of the biggest expected benefits is reduced travel time. The journey between East Delhi/Noida and South Delhi destinations like AIIMS, which can take around 35 to 40 minutes under normal conditions, would be cut to about 15 minutes using the improved corridor. But actual travel time will depend on traffic, entry and exit points and congestion on connecting roads.
Traffic Advisory for Commuters
Driving arrangements have already had to be modified at Sarai Kale Khan. The Delhi Traffic Police had put restrictions on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway exit to Sarai Kale Khan and traffic from the Madanpur Khadar side was diverted to Kalindi Kunj.
The temporary arrangement was made to ease traffic congestion around the inauguration and for the Sarai Kale Khan junction to be able to cope with the traffic pressure.
Sarai Kale Khan is already a major traffic convergence point, receiving vehicles from the Barapullah corridor, Ring Road, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and DND Flyway. Hence commuters who are going to the area are advised to check live traffic conditions and follow traffic police directions as soon as the new route opens.
Barapullah Phase-3 has been in the planning stage for years with the construction started in 2015 after the project was approved in 2014. The opening of the project is the completion of a major elevated road link to connect eastern and southern parts of Delhi.
With the corridor now opened, commuters from Mayur Vihar, East Delhi and nearby Noida areas are expected to get a new route towards Sarai Kale Khan and South Delhi, potentially reducing travel time and pressure on several existing roads.
