Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) announced a comprehensive master plan to have nearly 18,000 sanitation workers go on study tours across six major cities in Karnataka.
The initiative aims to expose sanitation workers to successful waste management models and modern civic practices adopted in other urban centres. The programme will be implemented in phases under the Central Government's Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, with study tours to be launched soon.
Learning from the Best
As Bengaluru is experiencing rapid urbanisation and population growth, the city generates thousands of tonnes of solid waste every day. Managing the waste of this exponential growth in population has become one of the greatest challenges for civic authorities.
As sanitation workers are so central to maintaining the city's hygiene, BSWML has decided to provide them with practical exposure to modern waste management systems already in place in other cities in Karnataka.
The study tours are designed to help sanitation workers understand best practices in:
Scientific solid waste segregation
Door-to-door waste collection systems
Recycling and resource recovery
Composting techniques
Sustainable waste disposal
Public cleanliness management
Citizen participation in waste segregation
Officials hope that the exposure to these models in-depth will lead to workers adopting more efficient methods once they come back to Bengaluru.
Focus on the scientific waste management
The city is moving toward more scientific and sustainable waste disposal methods, with Bengaluru’s waste generation increasing every year. And authorities say that just collecting garbage is no longer sufficient. Modern waste management has come to focus on segregation at source, recycling, composting organic waste, and reducing landfill dependency.
The BSWML initiative helps sanitation workers to learn from the ground up and not for the sake of cleaning. If we observe how other cities manage waste, we can help improve the sanitation standards of Bengaluru.
Empowering Frontline Sanitation Workers
Sanitation workers are the backbone of Bengaluru's cleanliness drive and work hard to keep roads, residential areas, markets, and public spaces clean every day. BSWML is committed to providing them with technical experience and training, and hence to appreciate their contributions, through training and the development of skills.
The idea is that investment in worker training will ultimately lead to better quality of civic services to residents.

The programme will be funded and implemented under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, which is focused on sustainable sanitation and modern waste management technologies in cities.
The mission is to create cleaner cities through better infrastructure, better waste processing, increased recycling, and increased public involvement in maintaining urban hygiene.

BSWML expects the study tours to build a stronger and more knowledgeable sanitation workforce capable of implementing innovative waste management practices across Bengaluru.
