A video of a heated verbal spat in a Bengaluru Metro coach has gone viral on social media and has revived the debate on language, regional identity and public behaviour in Bengaluru.
A video that has been widely shared online shows a woman known as the "Ghati Lady" in the city who seems to have been in the middle of the argument with some of her fellow travellers about which language she prefers to speak.
The argument began when passengers argued inside the metro coach. During her exchange, the woman is heard using abusive language against Kannada-speaking passengers while defending Hindi. Some commuters were angry at her comments and there was a tense verbal exchange that drew the attention of many passengers.
The video has brought heated reactions online and many users have since criticized the video’s use of offensive language and called for respectful communication in public spaces. We believe this incident is indicative of the larger language politics in Bengaluru, a city of cultural diversity and diverse people.
More recently there is a growing concern among Kannada activists and social media users that the state is continuously disrespectful to Kannada language and culture.
Many of the discussions have stressed that while Bengaluru welcomes people from all over India, mutual respect and understanding of Kannada and local customs is equally important.
At the same time, several internet users have suggested that we should not generalize communities based on the acts of individuals. They wrote that isolated incidents shouldn’t fuel regional divisions or hostility between Kannada-speaking residents and migrants from other states.
At the time of writing the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) did not have an official statement on the viral video itself. It is not known if there is any official complaint with the authorities about this incident.

The episode also reopened the debate about language usage in Karnataka. Recently, several examples of signboards, customer interaction, public services and so forth have led to the debate about how to give more emphasis to Kannada but also be open to people from all languages.
Social media platforms are seeing polarised opinions on a daily basis. Some people have asked for legal action against people who use abusive language in public, others have sought to calm things down and call for non-violent dispute in public and have asked people to keep the language difference at bay.
Experts say Bengaluru’s cosmopolitan nature requires mutual understanding and respect among residents from various parts of the country. They say basic Kannada can make the newbies more integrated and the natives are also able to appreciate the multilingual nature of the city.
The incident is yet another reminder that public conflict can quickly become national one in the age of social media.
