Thousands of Bengaluru commuters faced a day-long disruption on Thursday morning when a technical breakdown disrupted services on the Green Line of Namma Metro during one of the busiest commuting hours in the city. It meant office-goers, students, and other passengers stuck in the metro were stranded in the city’s cluttered stations.
The incident happened during the morning rush hour, when passenger volumes are highest. Some trains were delayed, while others were reportedly stopped between stations for some time, confusing commuters. A lot of passengers said they had no prior information about the disruption and had to wait at stations without knowing when services would resume.
Technical issue disrupts Green Line Operations
The problem was caused by a technical issue on the Green Line, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said.
In an official statement, BMRCL said:
- "A technical issue on the Green Line has resulted in delays to train services.
- Our technical team is working on a priority to fix the problem and restore normal operations at the earliest.
- We ask passengers to cooperate and regret the inconvenience."
But the company did not immediately describe what the technical problems were and did not provide an estimate on what time normal services would be restored.
The disruption occurred between 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM, when hundreds of thousands of commuters depend on Metro services to get to work, colleges, and universities.
Major stations include:
- Konanakunte Cross
- Yelachenahalli
- Jayanagar
- Banashankari
- Nadaprabhu Kempegowda (Majestic) Interchange
witnessed heavy crowds as trains arrived late or were delayed.
Platforms got crowded very quickly, and passengers waited for extended periods. Security personnel were managing the crowds and at some stations, controlling entry to guarantee passenger safety.
Many commuters have also reported missing office hours, exams, appointments, and scheduled meetings due to the delays.
The disruption drew widespread criticism on social media platform X, where passengers shared photographs and videos showing crowded platforms and long queues.
Some commuters expressed frustration at what they said was poor communication from BMRCL during the disruption.
One commuter wrote that no train had arrived at Konanakunte for nearly 30 minutes and questioned why there was no timely official update.
Another passenger said that as Metro service was suspended for more than 20 minutes, station announcements were delayed or missing, leaving commuters uncertain whether to continue waiting or seek alternative transportation.
Many users asked BMRCL to improve passenger communication during service interruptions
The disruption of Thursday's event has once again brought to light recurring technical issues in Bengaluru Metro operations.
A few times a week, the Green Line and Purple Line are interrupted by technical issues such as signalling and power issues. Often, these problems are addressed quickly, but commuters have repeatedly expressed their frustration over the lack of timely information during emergencies.
In any modern metro system, passenger associations have said technical faults can occur. But they also say that communication is equally important, so commuters can make informed travel decisions.
If they have access to station announcements, mobile alerts, and social media immediately, they can switch to other modes of transportation like BMTC buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws rather than waiting indefinitely, according to several commuter groups.
After the most recent disruption, commuters and transport experts have suggested various measures to improve passenger experience during service interruptions:
Real-time communication: Immediate announcements at stations, on mobile apps, and across social media whenever technical issues occur. Alternative transport arrangements: Coordination with BMTC to deploy feeder buses from affected Metro stations during prolonged disruptions. Preventive maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of trains, tracks, signalling systems, and electrical infrastructure during non-operational hours to reduce the likelihood of peak-hour failures. Transparent updates: Provide passengers with estimated restoration times and regular status updates until services return to normal.
Namma Metro has become the backbone of Bengaluru's public transport network, carrying lakhs of passengers every day and helping reduce the city's notorious traffic congestion. It is crucial to ensure that the Metro network keeps growing and its processes are reliable, and that passengers are communicated with effectively to retain public trust as it expands.
While BMRCL has assured commuters that technical teams are working to restore normal services, Thursday’s disruption highlights the growing necessity of having robust maintenance systems and quick communication during operational challenges.
