A serious controversy has developed after a professor also described derogatory and communal remarks by one of their professors on a Muslim student during class this week and brought out issues of systemic racism and discrimination in education.
According to the testimony, Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande repeatedly attacked Affan, the student, calling him a “terrorist” across nearly 60 students at class. According to the accounts from the students, the professor used the term at least 13 times, and had verbal abuse and sent her straight to a “dark place.”
Alleged Remarks & Classroom Incident
Witnesses said the professor frequently made inflammatory statements toward the student in relation to global conflicts and made derogatory generalizations about them. “Iran war happened because of people like you” and references to politicians have been reported as he was targeting the student according to religious faith and race by name.
In the process, the whole matter has raised questions in teacher education about classroom ethics, inclusivity and educator involvement and leadership to lead with respect education.
Concerns over evidence and Institutional response
In a worrying discovery, CCTV footage from the classroom so, the primary evidence–was allegedly deleted. This raised new issues in relation to transparency and whether evidence (not on the part of students) was suppressed in response.
Some of the school’s students who had voiced their support for Affan were suspended, some critics claim. The explanation was “talking during class” or retaliation, according to the official narrative.

Apology and Allegations of pressure
Although the professor supposedly apologized directly to the college administration, the affected student did not. This person is purported to have apologized on his side; the head of the department apologized to him.
Also there are assertions that subtle pressure was being put on the student to avoid further escalation of the issue. There are also suggestions that there might be an institutional influence and warnings about the student's future made further concerns about fairness and student protection.
Impact on the Student
The student and his family already have other personal challenges so even worse is not only that. The student was humiliated, isolated, and under pressure soon after, after the incident, despite the feeling of help and support received.
Wider Implications
The case has sparked an alarm of discrimination, accountability and school-wide protections needed to be strengthened. And for justice such an independent probe should be implemented so the future cannot have such events happen again too.
And until the matter is resolved, we all need to work with a fair investigation and student rights to respect and inclusivity in academic life; and respect for all to be at the core of that respect of respect is one thing.
