Bengaluru Rain Update: Relief After Record July Temperatures, IMD Predicts Rain Across Karnataka

After weeks of high temperatures for much of July, Bengaluru residents finally got a welcome rain, with a brief respite from the blistering heat of summer in the wake of hot weather. The sudden rain in parts of Bengaluru was unlike anything you’ve ever seen, which brought a respite from weeks of high temperatures that had driven the city through the hottest month of July to temperatures rarely seen at this time of year.

It rained in many areas in Bengaluru, including Rajajinagar, Malleswaram, Kurubarahalli, Majestic and surrounding areas. Even though the showers cooled things off and helped people to relax and relieve the heat, the rain also caused inconvenience for commuters and pedestrians. Many people took refuge at bus stops, underpasses and commercial buildings during the rain as it intensified during peak hours.

This city had experienced record-setting temperatures for July and was one of the hottest Julys in recent years. Weather experts explained that the unusual conditions were due to a weak southwest monsoon and changing weather patterns, in which rainfall and high daytime temperatures were experienced in large parts of Karnataka.

The recent showers, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), are part of a localised weather activity in several districts in the state. Heavy rain is not expected in all parts of the country in future, but scattered showers are expected to continue in some regions over the next few days.

Several districts in Karnataka's coastal areas are expected to see rain. The weather department forecast light to moderate rainfall to hit coastal areas of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, with winds between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour.

Aside from the coastal belt, other southern and central Karnataka districts are also expected to experience rainfall. These include Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Ballari, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, and Vijayanagara. Most of these areas could see light to moderate showers and cloudy conditions, meteorologists say.

The weather department says the southwest monsoon is expected to remain weak across Karnataka for the next seven days. For a few districts, maximum temperatures may remain above normal. Light rain and a few gusty winds are likely to occur in coastal and Malnad areas, and many of the interior districts will be in a mixture of sunshine, warm temperatures and occasional cloud cover.

Agricultural experts are closely monitoring the weather situation as dry weather conditions in the monsoon season will affect crop growth and water availability. Farmers in some parts of Karnataka are concerned about below-normal rainfall and its effect on agricultural activities.

Urban planners and local authorities are also monitoring changing weather patterns. Bengaluru, for example, has experienced both extreme heat and sudden rainfall in recent years, which makes it difficult to cope with climate change and rapid urbanisation.

For residents, the recent showers have been a welcome relief from the heat. But meteorologists say weather conditions could change in the coming weeks, and citizens have to be on the lookout for sudden changes in weather, including rain, gusty winds and rising temperatures.

Even as Karnataka is suffering from a weaker-than-usual monsoon season, the state is hopeful of more widespread rainfall in the coming weeks to support agriculture, replenish water reservoirs, and provide relief from the heat.
