A lot of people flocked to Bengaluru’s iconic KR Market ahead of Varamahalakshmi Pooja, one of the most celebrated festivals in Karnataka. Flowers, fruits, puja essentials, decorations, etc., all come from people rushing to the market in large numbers to make purchases.
With the festival on its way in, the footfall at KR Market is already very high. Shoppers were running down the street; vendors had colourful flowers in the market, fresh fruits and coconuts, turmeric, kumkum, betel leaves, banana leaves and other puja materials. There has been an increase in activity across the market, thanks to the festival.
Flowers were among the most sought-after, and those who bought flowers for their homes to decorate and eat traditional fare were in the market and were buying them before the festival.
Varamahalakshmi Pooja has great significance in Karnataka and various parts of South India. The festival is traditionally dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. There are so many families that take part in prayers and decorate their homes and make offerings.
Women play an important role in the celebrations, and families prepare elaborate arrangements to celebrate the pooja. The homes are festively decorated with flowers and mango leaves and other traditional elements, and the idol or symbolic representation of Goddess Lakshmi is adorned with jewellery, sarees and flowers.

At KR Market, the preparations have created a festive atmosphere with traders getting more and more demand for a lot of products. Fruit sellers, flower sellers, puja-item shops, etc. are being able to benefit from the seasonal shopping rush.
The market’s vibrant atmosphere also reflects Bengaluru’s long-standing festival shopping tradition. KR Market is one of the city’s busiest wholesale and retail centers and is known for its huge selection of flowers, fruits, vegetables, and other everyday-use products. During big festivals, the market is full, and there are crowds from all parts of the city.
The rush has also led to increased movement around the market area as families rush to the marketplace at the last minute. Flowers and other perishable items are preferred to be purchased close to the festival to keep them fresh for the festival itself.
The large crowd ahead of Varamahalakshmi Pooja shows how the city’s urban life is connected to its traditional celebration when you consider the size of the crowd before Varamahalakshmi Pooja. And even though Bengaluru’s pace of life is fast, festivals bring families together and encourage people to follow the culture of their families.
As the festival draws closer, the buzz at KR Market will not end. The bustling flower stalls, busy fruit shops and crowded streets of the market are all very much like those of Bengaluru people in preparation for Varamahalakshmi Pooja.
For the vendors, festival season is a very important period of business for them, and for shoppers the busy market is the start of their preparations. With flowers, fruits, decorations, and puja essentials being in high demand, KR Market is now very much in touch with the festively animated spirit of Bengaluru and has the strong flavours of festivity in the marketplace.
