Sensational turn in what was reported to be a tragic fire accident in Ramamurthy Nagar apartment. And the death in Bengaluru of 34-year-old software engineer Sharmila is finally going down as a premeditated murder, the Bengaluru police are said to have cracked this mystery case. On investigation, her 18-year-old co-neighbor Colonel Kurai who was a science student from Kerala, killed the techie and tried to burn the evidence following an unsuccessful harassment attempt.
An incident unfolded in an apartment in Subramanya Layout, Ramamurthy Nagar, on the night of January 3, 2026, when a fire engulfed the apartment. Thick smoke wafted from the flat, where Sharmila, a Mangaluru-based techie, lived alone, neighbours said. In the kitchen when fire services intervened they found Sharmila dead. At first it seemed to be that there was a short-circuit, as one bedroom was wholly gutted. But there were a few forensic anomalies which aroused the suspicion of the Ramamurthy Nagar Police.
The Disconnect
The fire burned primarily in the bedroom of Sharmila’s roommate (who was in Delhi), but Sharmila’s corpse was later discovered in the kitchen. No burns: It had no burning in Sharmila’s body and clothes, even with the smoke and fire filling the flat. The Locked Door: The main door was locked from the inside, indicating no forced entry through the front.
The 18-Year-Old One-Sided Lover
The breakthrough was driven by digital forensics. The police found that Sharmila’s cell phone remained missing from the scene. 3 days later the phone was turned on with a new SIM card. The location of the tower pointed directly to the nearby house. The suspect, Colonel Kurai (18), was a PUC science student who lived in the building next door. Despite being 16 years Sharmila’s junior, he developed a “one-sided obsession” with her.
The Night of the Crime: The Infiltration
Kurai crossed into Sharmila’s balcony using his understanding of the building and its layout from his terrace. The Assault: Once in the residence, he acted badly. When Sharmila fought back and tried to call for help, he panicked. Murder: In the kitchen, he overpowered her and smothered her to death with a pillow.
Destruction of evidence
Being a science student, Kurai thought fire would destroy all DNA and physical evidence. He dragged pillows and bedsheets into the roommate’s bedroom, lighting them on fire, then escaped back through the balcony.
The Slip-Up
Kurai remained at his home for a week after the murder, keeping everything from being perceived as normal to avoid detection. He thought he was safe because there weren't any CCTV cameras on the balcony and he hadn't called on her. The only error consisted in his stealing her phone and trying to use it with his own SIM card, which allowed the police to "dump" the tower data and track where they saw him.
Current Status
Colonel Kurai has been in custody of the Ramamurthy Nagar policemen for three days. During interrogation, he is said to have confessed the crime. Sharmila, who had worked in private companies for two years in Bengaluru, is survived by her family members in Mangaluru.
