Major parts of Bengaluru are experiencing a significant disruption in drinking water supply today, Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a one-day shutdown that is affecting over 80 wards across the city.
Reason for the Water Disruption
The primary reason for today's water cut is emergency repair work on a critical transmission pipeline. According to BWSSB Chairperson Dr. V. Ram Prasath Manohar, a serious leak was detected in a 3,000 mm diameter transmission pipeline belonging to the Cauvery 5th Stage network.
The leak has been traced to a damaged scour valve, which was causing significant water loss and massive pressure fluctuations in the supply chain. To prevent further infrastructure damage and ensure long-term stability for the newly commissioned Cauvery Stage 5, the board has halted pumping operations from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM today to facilitate these urgent repairs.
Areas Affected in Bengaluru
The shutdown is widespread, impacting both core city areas and peripheral zones that depend on the Cauvery Stage 5 network. The major affected regions include:
- East & North-East Bengaluru: Whitefield, Varthur, Gunjur, Kadugodi, Panathur, Thanisandra, Kothanur, and Byrathi.
- North Bengaluru: Dasarahalli, Doddabettahalli, Chikkabettahalli, Govindapura, and surrounding areas.
- South & South-West Bengaluru: Subramanyapura, Hemmigepura, Somapura, Turahalli, Gubbalala, and Vajarahalli.
- Other Key Locations: Ananthpura, Harohalli, Geddalahalli, Kadubeesanahalli, Lingadheeranahalli, and Abbigere.
Residents in these areas are likely to face either a complete halt in supply or very low pressure until late tonight. The BWSSB has advised citizens to use stored water judiciously. Normal supply is expected to be restored gradually starting tomorrow morning, December 18, once the pipeline pressure is stabilized.
