In a shocking example of the lengths bootleggers can go to avoid Bihar's prohibition enforcement, excise officials in Gopalganj reportedly intercepted a motorcycle carrying a modified LPG cylinder allegedly packed with illegal liquor.
The incident occurred near Karm Tola Phulwariya in the Kuchaikote area of Kuchaikote police station near the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border. The cylinder’s unusual appearance was what alerted the excise team during an anti-smuggling check, they reported.
Officials found that the cylinder had been structurally modified to create a concealed compartment. The hollowed-out cylinder was allegedly used for the transport of liquor instead of cooking gas.
127 Pouches of Country Liquor Recovered
According to the information provided, excise personnel stopped the motorcycle after noticing that an LPG cylinder was being carried tightly wrapped in a bedsheet.
According to officials, the cylinder was cut and modified. Inside the concealed space, 127 pouches of country liquor were found– each pouch containing 200 ml.
The liquor was identified locally as Bunty-Babli. The motorcycle rider was arrested and the modified cylinder and motorcycle were taken into custody.
The seizure highlights the increasingly unorthodox ways in which prohibited liquor is transported to avoid routine border checks.

Gopalganj becomes a key Border Enforcement Zone.
Gopalganj's location along the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border makes it an important area to monitor suspected interstate liquor movement. Bihar is still a prohibition state so border patrol officers are regularly checking and seizing along the border routes.
Officials told us smugglers are still changing their tactics to escape detection. Concealing inside vehicle components, spare tyres, water tanks and other modified containers has been one of the challenges for enforcement teams.
The latest case demonstrates how even ordinary household objects can allegedly be repurposed for illegal transportation.
Investigation Into Supply Network
After the seizure, the Excise Department has started to investigate the likely supply chain that went along with the consignment, the report added.
To determine where the liquor was made and where it was supposed to be delivered in Bihar, officials will question the arrested suspect. Other individuals may also be involved in transporting or distributing the contraband.
This case also underscores the ongoing enforcement challenge Bihar’s prohibition policy has created, particularly on the interstate borders.
The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act provides for aggressive action in liquor offences, and there is a penalty for the offence and the circumstances that led to the offence. Border checks, vehicle inspections, and other measures are still used to detect illegal liquor transport.
The new LPG cylinder seizure has once again drawn attention to the inventive concealment techniques allegedly employed by liquor smugglers operating across the UP-Bihar border.
