An old video of IPS officer Rahul Bansal talking about a ₹500 bribe has resurfaced online and is under fire for having accepted a much larger amount during his first field posting.
Bansal spoke about an incident where his brother needed a birth certificate for a US visa in the mock interview, the report said. A panchayat official asked for ₹500 for the document. Bansal said he paid the amount and felt uncomfortable giving a bribe.
It has now been put in front of people because Bansal is now under accusation of ₹1 crore. The contrast of the old video with the current allegation has raised questions about the stance he has taken on corruption and the accusations of corruption that are now being made against him.
The alleged amount is much higher than the ₹500 discussed in the old interview, so the resurfaced clip is especially striking. Social media users have been sharing it and asking if the officer who spoke strongly about the personal discomfort of even a small bribe still had the same attitude after joining public service.
It's important to differentiate between an allegation and a proven offence. Even an accusation of corruption does not establish guilt. Bansal's allegations will have to be investigated, and he will be able to defend himself against the allegations.
But the issue has raised broader questions about integrity in public service. Police officers, and therefore other public leaders, have huge power, and public confidence is central and can only be maintained if transparency is maintained and anti-corruption laws are adhered to.
The old mock-interview clip has gained attention because it is a clear statement on the ethical discomfort with bribery. Critics now contend that public declarations against corruption are meaningful only when they are matched by conduct in professional life.
The claim of a ₹1 crore payment during the first field posting has thus generated a lot of discussion online. If investigators could eventually find out that such a payment was made and Bansal was involved, that would raise serious questions about corruption and misuse of official position.
At the same time, the legal process remains important. Evidence, findings of investigation, and judicial proceedings will help determine whether the claim can be substantiated or not. Until then, the claim ought to be treated as an allegation, not as a fact.
It also underscores the bigger problem of corruption in public administration. Small bribes can cause huge trouble for ordinary citizens, and allegations involving large sums can undermine confidence in institutions intended to uphold the law.
The resurfaced video has added a new dimension to Bansal’s own earlier comments. Bansal’s comments about feeling “very bad” after paying ₹500 are now being viewed along with the much more serious allegation involving ₹1 crore.
The episode shows that accountability can’t only boil down to public statements. For officials at the top, ethical standards are most testing in the real world and when they have the power to make decisions that affect someone else’s.
If the allegations are proven through due process, the contrast between the old remarks and the alleged conduct would be especially significant. But until then, the case remains one that must be judged based on evidence, not social media commentary.
