Heavy Rain in Bengaluru for Next 3 Days? IMD Issues Yellow Alert, Warns of Thunderstorms Across Karnataka

In the coming days, Bengaluru will likely receive another amount of rainfall and thunderstorms following a yellow alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with more rain and thunderstorms forecast across the city and portions of Karnataka, additional rain in the next three days, along with further elevations in the possibility of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) advisories.

In the week, more thunderstorms will go along with minor-day-to-day thunderstorms, as well as more minor-day-to-day thunderstorms in Bengaluru, with less rain and thunderstorms that occur later in the evening and are accompanied by lightning and more high winds.

The officials from the weather office said residents were told to be cautious, particularly during hours of storm surge at the tentative peak. The alert follows heavy rain in parts of Bengaluru during the season, which helped cool some of the scorching summer heat. But it has also caused waterlogging and traffic jams in some parts.

Bengaluru’s Yellow Alert

The IMD is therefore calling the alert a “yellow alert,” giving a situation to be observed and advising people to stay abreast of it. That alert will remain in effect for Bengaluru and much of interior Karnataka for several days.

Those officials said thunderstorms would be most likely to form early afternoon through evening hours, with some localities having a short but heavy rain. In relatively remote areas where thunderstorms are brewing, wind speeds can remain between 30 and 50 kmph.

Rain Over Karnataka

Outside Bengaluru, rainfall, thunder and lightning are also expected in south interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, and parts of north interior Karnataka. Previous weather phenomena have already been predicted to be associated with strong pre-monsoon and moist cycles before the southwest monsoon (which brings strong pre-monsoon activities and moist cycles).

IMD officials said moisture-laden winds and atmospheric instability are playing a role in the intense thunderstorm activity over southern India.

Traffic and Waterlogging Issues!

The short showers have already caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas of Bengaluru in the past few days, resulting in slow traffic and disruption in some areas of Bengaluru during peak hours. Other rains in the coming days will only exacerbate traffic congestion in flood-prone areas, officials say.

Travellers were advised to travel slowly early in the evening hours, when thunderstorms are most likely to intensify. Bad weather can affect flight operations right now, as well. Airlines have even posted advisories warning passengers of delays due to thunderstorms and visibility problems.

Safety Advisory for Residents

IMD and disaster management agencies encourage people to avoid dangerous risks during thunderstorms. Residents should remain indoors as lightning occurs, refrain from sheltering under trees, and fasten loose parts on the outside that could be affected by strong winds. Those with two-wheeled rides, or who avail themselves of public transportation in the evening, have been advised to use rain gear and be on alert for sudden changes to the environment.

Relief from Heat

These brought major disruptions, but several Bengalureans appreciated the rainfall after a few days of hot, humid days. The weather was meant to be a bit mild this week; clouds and rain here and there kept everything wet. Forecasters are predicting that this will persist through the next few weeks, with the monsoon slowly moving across the southern Indian state of Karnataka to Bengaluru, where more weather can become the focus of the shifting patterns.
