A 40-year-old man identified as Dadapeer was killed in broad daylight on a busy road in the Banashankari district of Hubballi on Friday, prompting a police investigation into a possible long-standing rivalry, police said.
According to preliminary information, Dadapeer, who was a resident of a village near Mishirkoti, was allegedly pursued by two young men before being attacked. Police said they are reviewing footage collected by witnesses and other evidence and are still trying to find and apprehend the suspects and still not yet have a clear motive for the attack.
Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar said investigators were looking into a possible link between the killing and a murder case involving the deceased more than a decade ago. Dadapeer had been involved in a murder case about 11 years earlier, the police said.
The police commissioner said a relative of a person linked to the previous case may be among the suspects. Police are currently looking at a video posted on social media and other evidence from the scene, he said.
A relative of Dadapeer said he had been briefly imprisoned after the 2011 murder of a man identified as Maruti. The case was closed and Dadapeer returned to his village where he was living with his wife and three children, they said.
The relative also claimed the dispute between the two sides had been over a land dispute. The family said the land dispute was linked to the earlier murder case.
