The daughter of a Delhi Police Sub-Inspector (SI) who sustained injuries during clashes between police personnel and protesters in the national capital claimed her father was attacked by a violent mob and was nearly lynched near the protest stage at Jantar Mantar.
In a report about the incident, the officer’s daughter said her father had been stationed at the main protest site and was on the front line near the barricades, where a lot of protesters had gathered. She also spoke about her father’s long career in policing before joining the Delhi Police.

“Before joining the police, my father was a Marine Commando in the Indian Navy. He dedicated 15 years of his life to the Indian Navy,” she said.
The police officer had been closely monitoring developments at the protest site, she said, and had expressed concern over the nature of the gathering. Whenever he returned home from duty, he would tell his family that the protest no longer appeared to be limited to students, she said.
“Whenever my father came home at night, he used to say that the protest no longer looked like a student protest. Many antisocial elements had gotten involved in it,” she said.
The daughter said the situation turned violent on the afternoon of July 25. She said her father was pulled away by a group of people and attacked near the stage at Jantar Mantar.
“The next day, on the 25th, my father was pulled by a rowdy mob and almost lynched near the stage at Jantar Mantar. This happened at around 2:00 PM,” she said.
She said her father lost consciousness after the alleged attack and remained unconscious for about four hours while receiving treatment at the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.
She said the injured officer was brought home by his colleagues around 10:00 PM. She recalled the emotional impact of seeing her father return in a severely injured condition.
“His uniform was completely stained with blood. It was extremely painful for us to see him in that condition,” she said.
The officer’s daughter expressed concern about posts and comments on social media after the incident. The girl said her father was being portrayed as a criminal despite injuries he suffered in the protest-related violence.
“When I opened social media, I did see that my father was being called a criminal,” she said.
She said some people attacking police officers later approached the Supreme Court and filed complaints against her father and police officers. It caused even more distress to the family, and she turned to legal remedies.
“The very next day, I came to know that the people who had attacked my father were approaching the Supreme Court to wash away their crimes and were filing complaints against him and all the police personnel. I was very hurt and decided that I should also seek justice for my father,” she said.
The daughter said she was supported by police families whose relatives were also affected by violence. She and her husband approached the Supreme Court together and sought legal representation to put their problems before the court.
“We requested an advocate to present our case before the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The advocate told us that we, too, have equal rights as citizens of this country and that we would also get justice,” she added.
This incident brings new questions about police officers’ safety during large demonstrations and the rights of police and their families. The daughter’s account is her version of the incident; to tell the truth, we still have legal and judicial scrutiny on the events from both sides.
As things continue to unfold and police families struggle to get credit for the injuries and hardships faced by staff who were deployed during the protest, this issue is only likely to remain unresolved, and the investigation will continue.
