Narendra Modi on Thursday went on to warn that those who want to "harm the youth’s future as well as others who want to damage the future of India will not be spared from being punished, and to keep up the pressure on those who are trying to “harm the future of the youth”
The prime minister sent a strong message against people and groups that want to harm the future of the youth in India, as he declared earlier today: “Those who do so will not be spared.
The statement has quickly become a major talking point in the political context and the opposition and ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) both react to it.
In a public speech PM Modi made clear that the government would not only safeguard the opportunities for young Indians, but would also have a transparent recruitment, education and public administration.
We also witnessed a large crowd of protesters around Delhi’s Jantar Mantar where we had planned to stage protests demanding action on all the problems facing students and job aspirants. Protesters screamed slogans, carried placards and rallied to the government’s side. Security arrangements around the protest site had been beefed up to maintain law and order and Delhi Police monitored the situation closely.
The Prime Minister did not shy away from calling out individuals who took advantage of young people and had been seen as doing so. “We have introduced a number of reforms in order to improve employment opportunities, in order to improve the education system and in order to make recruitment more transparent,” he said.
Political responses were swift. BJP supporters hailed PM Modi’s speech as a symbolic statement of commitment to protecting the aspirations of India’s youth and opposition leaders questioned whether the government’s policies have reached into unemployment and recruitment. And social media has been also full of discussion on the issue - hashtags related to the protest and the Prime Minister’s speech have been trending all over social media.
The protests at Jantar Mantar were peaceful and the demonstrators were willing to talk to the authorities. So the youth activist movement is to bring attention to youth issues and make sure that we do it now so that the government can address them properly, as the youth’s demands are being made and addressed in a timely manner, they said.
