Police in Kalaburagi, Karnataka arrested two people in connection with an alleged attempt to murder and criminal intimidation case after they allegedly threatened a bar owner using a fake pistol during a fight in a popular bar and restaurant.
The incident, which took place on July 22, has drawn attention due to the use of a replica firearm to allegedly intimidate the victim and the swift action taken by the police in apprehending the accused.
According to the initial investigation, the incident took place at the Beeralingeshwar Bar & Restaurant in Kalaburagi City. The two suspects, Syed Jilan and Javed Patel, were sitting in the air-conditioned part of the establishment when they allegedly ate gutka and spat in the place, Kalaburagi city police said. They were questioned by Sharanu Kapanur, the bar owner, about spitting and asked to maintain cleanliness in the restaurant.
The verbal exchange quickly turned into a heated argument, investigators said. The accused allegedly became aggressive after being confronted by the bar owner, the complaint said. One of the men is alleged to have produced what appeared to be a pistol and used it to threaten the owner. Police eventually found out that the gun was not a real gun and not a real weapon, but a fake or imitation gun. But investigators said the weapon was used to intimidate and create panic at the scene.
The complaint says the accused threatened to assault the bar owner and staff, and staff who were in the room intervened. The situation was eventually resolved and no more violence took place. The victim went to the police and filed a formal complaint.
Following the complaint, officers from Ashok Nagar Police Station investigated, gathered statements from witnesses, and examined CCTV footage installed inside the bar. Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, police found and arrested Syed Jilan and Javed Patel. The imitation pistol used during the incident was also recovered as part of the investigation.
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, assault, and other applicable offences. The pistol was found to be fake and any use of it to threaten another person would still result in serious legal consequences depending on the facts established during the investigation.
As part of the investigation, police are still looking at all aspects of the case: the sequence of events leading to the confrontation, the intent behind allegedly displaying the fake weapon, and whether any other offences were committed during the incident. CCTV footage and witnesses are also being reviewed in order to establish a timeline, said the police.
The incident has once again aroused concerns over public behaviour in commercial establishments and the use of imitation firearms to intimidate others. Even replica or toy guns can incite panic in public places and can be serious when used to threaten or coerce persons, law enforcement said.
Kalaburagi’s restaurant and bar owners have also voiced concern about aggressive customers, saying that maintaining order and ensuring the safety of staff and patrons is a serious challenge. They have called on authorities to continue strict enforcement against those who engage in violent or disruptive behaviour in public venues.
Police officials said investigations are ongoing and any allegations will be investigated on the basis of all available evidence. The accused will be brought before the appropriate court and further legal proceedings are going to take place in line with the law. People should calm down and not resort to intimidation or violence, and that imitation weapons can be dangerous, said police.
The Ashok Nagar Police’s swift response to identify and arrest the suspects has been appreciated by local people who hope that such high-level action will serve as a checkmate to future incidents and make business owners and the public safer.
