Kangana Ranaut has tried to explain her controversial “generation gutter” comment after an FIR was filed against her in Agra. The actress-politician said her comments were not directed at all young people or all Gen Z, but at a small group of people who she said were involved in objectionable behaviour and used offensive language.
Kangana’s comments had triggered controversy as she criticized young people protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over the NEET-UG paper leak. In social media posts, she questioned the language and behaviour displayed by some protesters and described what she called a section of young, westernised Indian women as “generation gutter.” She has since been criticized for insulting students and young people.
Kangana explained what she meant by the phrase in an interview with ANI and attempted to put her earlier comments into context. She argued that she was not making a sweeping statement about every young person in the country.
Kangana Says Remark Was Not About All Young People
Kangana, when asked about her choice of words, referred to people who referred to themselves as “cockroaches.” She added that if someone chooses to identify themselves using such a phrase, then cockroaches are creatures that emerge from gutters and should not be considered offensive.
Kangana said she would not consider herself a cockroach and would object if someone called her one. But she said her reference was to people who use such terms and not to the whole youth population.
The actress went on to say criticism of a certain section of young people should not be interpreted as criticism of all young Indians. She explained that the term “generation gutter” was directed towards some people and some behaviors that she believes deserve scrutiny.
She also cited drug use, betting, gambling and the dark web as some of the bigger issues with her remarks. But Kangana said to talk about these problems among young people is not to say that the entire generation is involved in such activities.
“Did I say all youth belong to the gutter?” she asked while defending her comments. She said she was referring to a certain group, rather than to Gen Z altogether.
Controversy Began After Jantar Mantar Protest Posts
Kangana posted a series of Instagram Stories where she commented on videos and reels from the protest. She voiced her frustration and disapproval of what she felt was disturbing content and the language and behavior of young people.
In one of her posts, she referred to a section of westernised Indian women as “generation gutter.” The statement quickly gained attention online, with critics accusing the BJP MP of insulting young women and students who were exercising their right to protest.
The controversy was compounded by the fact that the comments came at a time when student protests and allegations linked to the NEET-UG were also raging. Kangana’s stance received both criticism and acceptance: those on the side felt that she was calling out bad behaviour and those on the other side felt that her words were too derogatory.
FIR Filed Against Kangana Ranaut In Agra
An FIR was subsequently filed against Kangana in Agra for her remarks. The complaint was made by advocate and Rajiv Gandhi Bar Association president Ramashankar Sharma who said that the actress-politician insulted students and parents through her statements.
And Kangana has also repeatedly made controversial comments about different sections of society, the complainant has alleged. The law will shape how the complaint progresses and whether any further action should be taken.
The first hearing in the case is scheduled for August 21, adding another legal dimension to a controversy that has already generated considerable debate on social media.
Kangana’s Clarification Puts Focus On Context
Kangana’s latest statement seems to be an attempt to argue that her original comments were directed at specific individuals and behaviours rather than an entire generation. Her explanation is very much context-specific and her argument that criticism of a particular group should not be viewed as a generalisation about all young people.
