The 24-hour nationwide strike, which started at midnight, is an attempt to protest against the new labour codes, the proposed India-US trade deal, and hopes for the revival of MGNREGA. Here comes what is working and what is not all over Karnataka today.
Schools and Universities: Mixed Status
The Karnataka government has not sanctioned a state holiday for the entire state at this time.
- Government Institutions: Nearly all government schools and colleges are still officially open.
- To avoid transport safety issues, some private school managements in Bengaluru and Mysuru declared a holiday and transitioned to online classes.
- Tips: Parents should also be encouraged to make sure they are informed about their specific institutions’ WhatsApp groups or apps at the last minute.
Disruption on Banks and Financial Services: Partial
This is expected to most impact banking operations today.
- Public Sector Banks: Leading unions like AIBEA, BEFI are taking part. Banking, cheque clearing services, cash deposits and branch business will all be delayed. .
- SBI and HDFC: And though these banks have said they have plans in place to continue functioning at normal levels, they cautioned that work could be “impacted to a limited extent.”
- ATMs & Online Banking: They are still working.
Public Transport: KSRTC, BMTC
Commuters should be prepared for delays.
- KSRTC and BMTC management have directed staff members to report for duty, but if unions take an active role, fewer buses might be available.
- Namma Metro: The metro service in Bengaluru is projected to run as it usually does.
- Autos & Cabs: There has been local union solidarity. Yes, many app-based cabs (Ola/Uber) are also in operation, but availability in protest hotspots may be limited.
Markets and Private Offices
- Wholesale markets and shops in places where unions are prominent, such as Hubballi and Dharwad, might also see a half-shutdown during protest marches (between 11am and 3pm usually).
- IT/private sector: Offices open, but many companies in Bengaluru have pushed WFH to eliminate congestion potential from protest rallies.
What Remains Open?
- Essential Services: Hospitals, pharmacies, ambulance service.
- Emergency Supplies: Milk booths, gas agencies, grocery stores.
- Airports: Flight operations are unchanged, but passengers are encouraged to depart early for the airport.
