Consequently, the Karnataka government has freed up ₹450 crore as relief from a year of already-pending salary arrears for thousands of transport workers. This shift happens after weeks of tension, protests and negotiations from transport workers to go over long-outstanding demands with state authorities.
At state-controlled transport companies, workers had been asking about dues they hadn’t been paid for months and had to fend for themselves in trying to come up with cash.
Throughout the State
Protesters railed through the country, calling on the government to clear arrears that had been pending for two years before that.
This situation created a lot of unrest within the transport system for people who used to call them. Only a year after getting its first signal of recognition from the government, the official will grant an order that releases ₹ 450 crore to resolve these arrears. The arrears relate to an aggregate remaining sum of ₹1,271.92 crore due during 26 months.
The most recent instalment is a partial settlement, but they are beginning to see progress toward resolving the dilemma.
Corporation Wise Allocation
The funds released are distributed to the four state transport corporations of India as follows:
- Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation – ₹143.85 crore.
- Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation – ₹137.24 crore.
- North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation – ₹87.00 crore.
- Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation – ₹81.91 crore.
These funds should offer immediate financial relief to employees who are stuck paying late bills that have been creating economic hardship.
Some Relief, More Work Ahead
Even after the first cycle of payment was welcomed, transport employee unions have been worried about the remaining dues. An additional ₹821.92 crore is outstanding from the total amount of ₹1,271.92 crore available. Union representatives have called on the government to release the outstanding amount at short notice.
They say, though the first instalment is helpful, full settlement is required if employees’ financial hardship is to ever have a real resolution.
Warning of Repeated Protests
Workers' unions have indicated that they could also mount a fresh appeal if the government doesn't offer them a clear deadline for releasing the remaining penalties.
Leaders have said extended waits could again stir up unrest across the state. The earlier protests had disrupted transport services and raised complaints among workers. Authorities are now pressed to stop it ticking until the remaining funds are disbursed, and this is the priority.
Government’s Stance
They have said that the staggered release of funds is "currently in line with available funds." The federal government will continue the disbursement of the remaining amount in the next phase as a matter of course, but no dates have been officially stated.
Conclusion:
The release of ₹450 crore is a historic step towards resolving the issue of salary arrears of Karnataka’s transport employees. Temporary relief in this respect may not be enough, so the proper attention now is turning towards the timely discharge of the remaining dues.
