Residents of Bengaluru and several parts of interior Karnataka are advised to keep their woolens ready as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a further dip in temperatures over the next 48 to 72 hours. A cold wave-like situation is emerging across the state, with North Karnataka recording some of the lowest temperatures of the season.
Bengaluru: The "Air-Conditioned" City Gets Chiller
For Bengaluru residents, the early morning and late-night temperatures have already started hovering between 14°C and 16°C. However, the IMD predicts that the mercury could drop further to 12°C in the coming days due to the influence of dry northerly winds.
- Morning Fog: Dense fog is expected at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and surrounding areas, potentially affecting early morning flight schedules.
- Daytime Weather: While the nights are chilly, the daytime remains pleasant with clear skies and maximum temperatures reaching around 26°C to 28°C.
North Karnataka: The Coldest Belt
While Bengaluru is feeling the nip in the air, districts in North Interior Karnataka are witnessing a significant drop in minimum temperatures, with some areas recording single-digit figures.
Districts with the Lowest Recorded Temperatures:
- Bagalkot: Currently the coldest district in the state, recording a minimum of 9.5°C.
- Vijayapura: Temperatures have dipped to 10.2°C.
- Dharwad & Belagavi: Recording temperatures between 11°C and 12°C.
- Bidar: Known for its harsh winters, Bidar is expected to see a further drop by the weekend.
IMD Forecast and Reason for the Chill
The weather department attributes this sudden chill to the clear sky conditions and the flow of cold, dry winds from the Himalayan region toward the southern peninsula. Without cloud cover to trap the earth's heat, "radiative cooling" is causing temperatures to plummet rapidly after sunset.
