Karnataka is set for a significant weather change as a drop in atmospheric pressure over the Bay of Bengal and its associated weather systems continue to influence the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rain across Bengaluru and parts of Coastal and South Interior Karnataka for the next three days, with conditions expected to stabilise towards the weekend.
The unseasonal wet spell is primarily driven by the remnant of a weakened cyclonic system (previously Cyclone Ditwah) that has moved inland over the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. This system has evolved into a well-marked low-pressure area, drawing moisture and creating a trough that extends across South Interior Karnataka, North Kerala, and the Lakshadweep area. This influx of moisture is the key factor lowering air pressure and causing precipitation.
In Bengaluru, the forecast indicates a significant likelihood of light to moderate rain and thundershowers starting from Thursday (December 4) and continuing into Friday (December 5). The cloudy conditions and rain are expected to keep maximum temperatures in the comfortable range of 25 C to 26 C, with minimum temperatures hovering around 17C. The city's air quality, which had recently shown signs of improvement, is likely to benefit further as the rainfall washes away pollutants.
The impact will be felt more pronouncedly along the Coastal Karnataka districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. These regions are expected to experience light to moderate rain and thundershowers, particularly on Thursday and Friday. Officials have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant, although no severe weather warnings (Red or Orange) are currently in place for the coast. The weather is expected to clear up by Saturday (December 6) across all three regions as the low-pressure system moves away and weakens further.
