Karnataka Weather Update: Pre-Monsoon Rains Forecast for March End

After a scorching February, Karnataka faced a major shift in weather on Wednesday. Heavy rains hit over eight districts. The sudden rain has caused concerns among farmers about crop safety, but brought great relief to citizens, parched landscapes and wildlife facing heat rise. It is a cooling trend that looks like ahead of the start of the official pre-monsoon showers of around late March, India Meteorological Department (IMD) statement quoted.

Forecast: Where to expect showers today

Most of the state will return to dry conditions by Friday of this time; isolated, however, isolated rain for certain districts now the IMD has forecast isolated incidences in these specific pockets today.

  • Coastal And South Interior Karnataka: Light, light rainfall with thunderstorms or rain is likely to occur in one or two places within the Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Mysuru, and Hassan districts in Karnataka.
  • Dry weather zones: Udupi, Uttara Kannada and the whole North Interior of Karnataka Districts, apart from the rest, along with Bengaluru (Urban and Rural), Chamarajanagar and Shivamogga, are expected to be dry.
  • Temperature Outlook: Dry weather is forecast for the state from tomorrow until March 4, providing a brief return to hot temperatures.

Pre-Monsoon arrives (Mango Showers)

As the pre-monsoon showers come, they are anticipated to feature thunder and lightning, accompanied by breezy winds, through the state and all the way to last week of March.

  • Entry Point: The rains are anticipated to converge from the Wayanad region in Kerala into Chamarajanagar through Gundlupet. Spread: After the one in Chamarajanagar, the pre-monsoon season will spread over other districts in South Interior Karnataka, which offers an important reprieve before the southwest monsoon descends in June.
  • Bengaluru: Early-morning fog and warm days. Bengaluru, the State capital, is in the process of moving towards a transition phase currently.

The IMD forecasts partly cloudy skies in the next 48 hours.

  • Temperature: The maximum is expected to last for 32°C and the minimum is expected to be around 20°C.

These situations affect day-to-day visibility and may mean one might be out of sight during early hours.

Systemic Weather Conditions

Meteorologists are currently tracking several atmospheric circulations affecting the south coast, which include:

  • Cyclonic Circulation: Continual in the Southeast Bay of Bengal reaching up to 1.5 km high.
  • Arabian Sea Influence: Another circulation running over the Northeast Arabian Sea is off the coast of Gujarat. A trough from South Interior Karnataka to Marathwada (Maharashtra) channels moisture into the state.

Brace for a Harsh Summer

Though there have been recent rains, the IMD has issued a long-range summer forecast that begins March 1. Areas of North Interior Karnataka (Kalaburagi, Bagalkot and Vijayapura) may be subjected to extreme heatwaves that could push temperatures above 43°C to 45°C. Residents are advised to plan for a hotter-than-average March and keep on top of their hydration.
