The already looming Kedarnath Yatra is placed on a high alert after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow weather warning for the Kedarnath region, which called for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds to be expected across portions of Uttarakhand.
Officials have stepped up safety precautions, including monitoring the itinerary hampered by erratic weather. Officials responsible for the Char Dham pilgrimage said the bad weather is now impacting travel and movement around the area. The Himalayan shrine is to be closely observed and maintained with caution as passengers travel along official guidance, it is explained.
According to reports, as regards Kedarnath, helicopter services have been suspended for some time as the visibility becomes poor and the weather is sometimes not so good. Civil authorities in Phata and Sonprayag, Sersi and Guptkashi, among others, have started to interrupt services amid the increase in passenger safety concerns.
Uttarakhand has had its district administration officials reportedly turn on the volume on surveillance in vulnerable sections of the Yatra path, including landslides-prone and rock-sliding zones. Several disaster relief teams, police and emergency workers have been deployed at various locations to assist pilgrims if the weather gets worse.
IMD’s yellow alert has set many concerned since Kedarnath is among the weather-sensitive pilgrimage corridors in India. Sudden rainfall, snow, fog, and landslides often disrupt movement during the Char Dham Yatra season.
Investigators have also warned followers to avoid unnecessary movement around the worst seasons of heavy rain, and to check in on live weather when they start travelling. The officials advise pilgrims who go on trekking with elderly family members and children to be circumspect while hiking, as routes get slick and the temperature dwindles.
The state government of Uttarakhand changed its traffic and crowd control in some areas for the Yatra, as pilgrims keep arriving. Latest ground-level news reports have shown the thick traffic congestion at the backhairs between Guptkashi, Sonprayag and Gaurikund, the long lines of vehicles and transportation-wise delays most of high Yatra days.
Dislocations, a by-product of the new climate, have also made it more difficult to move in these areas. As for travel conditions in the Himalayas, the Kedarnath undergoes rapid change within minutes. A clear morning can quickly turn to heavy rain or thunderstorms in the afternoon, as is quite prevalent during bad weather, and as a result, pilgrims should be prepared ahead of time.
The Yatra itself has often been cancelled, interrupted, and trips have been interrupted in the past by landslides on the Kedarnath route after the rainy season. This means they are taking the latest weather warning very seriously, as they do not want to have any big accidents.
The city has also instructed pilgrims to offer shelter from rain, warm clothes, medicines, power banks and emergency supplies in the surrounding mountain region. Travellers are also advised to leave buffer time in their schedules to account for some of the delays potential that can result from weather or traffic.
Annually, lakhs of people visit the Kedarnath temple, which is consecrated to Lord Shiva, as part of the Char Dham Yatra. Large mass periods are also associated with the pilgrimage, especially on weekends and holidays: It adds to the burden on the roads, accommodation and transport.
As it stands, the Yatra has not completely stopped yet, though at this point, officials say, despite the weather alert. But if the situation gets hazardous, temporary stops and transport restrictions will likely be implemented. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and warning pilgrims to avoid panic, but to adhere to the official advice of local authorities and disaster management teams, the report said. And with more erratic weather events now in the Himalayan region, vigilance and preparedness will be required, it said, to keep thousands of devotees undertaking the divine trek to Kedarnath safe.
