The panic gripped residents of Todaraisingh town in Rajasthan’s Tonk district as a wild leopard was seen straying from hills and entering a liquor shop near SBI Chauraha, injuring a salesman and keeping him trapped inside. The dramatic event caused panic in the tourist town and frightened residents rushed to safety as rescue efforts were launched.
The leopard is believed to have made its way into the town from the surrounding forested and hilly areas, likely searching for food or lost its way, according to preliminary reports. Wildlife experts say such incidents can happen when natural habitat is disturbed, prey is scarce or wild animals accidentally get into human settlements.
People said the leopard suddenly appeared near the commercial area, alarming shoppers and passersby. At that point, the animal went inside a liquor store and started to panic inside, people said.
Those who were inside the shop were also at risk of getting attacked by the leopard and the man was injured in his nose, shoulder, and hands. The leopard even attacked him but the salesman had good presence of mind enough to escape from its reach.
As officials and eyewitnesses reported, the salesman ran out of the shop and opened the rolling shutter instantly to keep the leopard in the store. His quick thinking prevented the animal from getting into the market area and potentially posing a risk to the public.
The trapped leopard continued to move around inside the store, knocking over shelves and breaking several liquor bottles, the report said. Videos and photographs from outside the store started circulating on social media in time.
Police arrived on the scene soon and cordoned off the surrounding area to keep curious onlookers away from the shop. Forest Department officials were also on site and emergency teams were sent to bring in the leopard quickly in an effort to capture and relocate it.
Residents should remain calm and avoid gathering near the rescue site, they said, and keeping a safe distance would allow wildlife personnel to move on from the site without prolonging the animal’s stress.
Leopards avoid human contact as much as possible, wildlife experts say. But when frightened and cornered, or surrounded for example, they are defensive and will respond defensively to the situation, which makes them more likely to attack. So rescue operations for large carnivores would have to be carefully planned and well-prepared with specialized equipment, and with the assistance of highly trained personnel to keep humans safe and the animal safe.
The injured salesman received medical care for his injuries and the official said his condition was stable, but that he would be watched for the remainder of the recovery period. Local residents praised him and his quick thinking for saving many lives from a potentially much worse situation in the heavily populated neighborhood.
Human-wildlife encounters have become more common in several parts of India, particularly in areas where urbanization intersects with traditional wildlife habitat. Conservationists have repeatedly stressed the necessity of protecting natural ecosystems while strengthening measures to prevent humans from conflict with wild animals.
Forest officials also asked people not to provoke or try to capture wild animals during such incidents. The Forest Department or local police should be informed immediately if they see wildlife in residential or commercial areas, they said.

A lot of wildlife corridors should be open, forests should be kept open, habitat conservation is also needed and public awareness should be increased so we can minimize the chances of wildlife encounters. People should also make sure frightened wild animals have space, not crowds, as panic can make rescue operations more difficult.
We know there is a tension between growing human settlements and wildlife conservation, but what happened in Todaraisingh is another case in point.
