The crash, which took place on Monday, also injured 40 passengers, six of whom were in critical condition.

According to police, the private omni bus was going at a high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered into the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming government bus. The impact was so severe that both buses were badly damaged and several passengers were trapped in them.

Emergency services and local residents, police and firefighters descended on the accident site as soon as news of the collision was received. The buses’ passengers were pulled out for several hours by rescue teams. The injured were transported to hospitals near the accident site.

Five people died in the accident and more than 40 others sustained injuries of varying severity. Six passengers who suffered serious injuries were sent to Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital where they are now being treated under close medical supervision. Doctors said the condition of some of the critically injured remains serious.

Witnesses said the crash was so violent that the loud impact drew nearby residents to the scene and they had begun to save passengers before emergency workers arrived. Traffic was backlogged on the highway due to the accident and to the rescue work and clearing of the wreckage.

The police have registered a case and are investigating the accident. Initial investigations indicate that the omni bus driver may have lost control of the vehicle, but officials are also exploring other factors, including speeding, mechanical failure, and road conditions. Both buses will be checked thoroughly for damage.

The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their families. All victims are identified and help is being offered to their families.

Commercial passenger bus road accidents are still a major source of concern in India. The speed limits need to be strictly enforced, vehicle inspections conducted frequently and driver training is needed for reducing the number of deaths on highways.

The Tamil Nadu government has expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and assured the injured they are receiving the best possible medical care. Further action will be taken once the investigation into the cause of the accident is complete, officials said.

The tragic collision near Kottampatti is another reminder of road safety and responsible driving. The government has also asked for drivers to be very careful and follow traffic laws to prevent the same in the future.
