Tuesday night, a mass panic struck Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport following a ground collision between two passenger-laden aircraft from two of India’s biggest, leading commercial carriers, Air India and IndiGo. The Event The incident unfolded on the taxiway at 9:00 PM.
Air India flight AI 2732 was en route to Coimbatore and was either stationary or in the process of pushing back for departure when it was struck by IndiGo flight 6E 791, which had recently landed from Hyderabad, officials said. The right wingtips of both Airbus A320 aircraft struck each other with visible damage to the winglets, they said. At the other end of each plane, passengers on those two flights claimed they experienced a “sudden shudder” and “metallic scraping sounds” as the planes brushed against each other.

Emergency Response and Safety for Passengers
Emergency services were rapidly dispatched to the location. No injuries were reported among the hundreds of passengers and crew members aboard either flight.
- Air India Statement: “The Mumbai-Coimbatore service aircraft came into contact with another airline's aircraft while waiting on the taxiway. The aircraft has been grounded for technical checks as a precautionary measure.”
- IndiGo Statement: "The wingtip of our aircraft operating flight 6E 791 from Hyderabad came into contact with another aircraft while taxiing after landing. All passengers are safe and have disembarked.”
Investigation commenced
DGCA said it initiated a deep probe into the incident. Preliminary reports indicate a communication breakdown or technical error during ground marshaling in a congested taxiway. Both airlines are developing alternative flights for passengers heading to Coimbatore.
