The holy city of Puri in Odisha is well prepared for the Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra from the Gundicha Temple to the Jagannath Temple.
The annual festival which draws lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad, is being conducted under high security arrangements for the safety of pilgrims and the smooth conduct of the religious procession.
The famous Rath Yatra marks the end of the great celebrations of the Rath Yatra. In this holy journey the three gods go back to the 12th-century Jagannath Temple on their beautiful wooden chariots. Devotees consider the procession very auspicious and they hope for good and spiritual fulfillment.
In Puri, there are thousands of security personnel this year. Police, rapid response teams, traffic officials, disaster management units have been deployed at strategic locations to handle the massive crowds expected during the festival.
CCTV cameras, drone surveillance and AI-enabled monitoring systems are also being used to enhance security and monitor crowd movement in real time.
Special traffic diversions and parking arrangements have been implemented to avoid congestion in and around the temple town.
Emergency medical teams, ambulances, drinking water facilities and help desks have also been established for the convenience of devotees.
The Odisha government has been working with many departments that are involved in coordinating the event, including police, health services, fire services, and municipal authorities in coordinating with each other and in the event’s progress. Volunteers and temple administration officials are working together to assist pilgrims.

Bahuda Yatra is indeed a major cultural event that celebrates Odisha’s rich spiritual tradition as well as religious significance. Tourists, photographers and devotees from all over the world come together to witness the grand chariot procession and participate in the centuries-old tradition, making it a well-known festival.
The devotees are advised to cooperate with security personnel, follow the designated routes, and avoid overcrowded areas, the police said. They also said, visitors should remain hydrated, take precautions against the weather, and go to official assistance centers if needed.
Puri hotels and various local businesses are seeing more visitors in the vicinity of the festival now and more people have started to arrive.
The local vendors, artisans, and transport companies are also very much helped by the crowds of pilgrims during the Rath Yatra season.
As the great chariots prepare to roll through the Grand Road (Bada Danda), devotees have been getting so excited. The Bahuda Yatra is not only symbolic of the return of the gods to their homes but also is a testimony to Odisha's dedication, spirit and heritage of religion decades in the making.
