Rajnath Singh Says Roads, Tunnels and Border Infrastructure Will Remain Crucial for Future Wars

The importance of strategic infrastructure for India’s borders has been underlined by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, who said roads, tunnels, airfields and ports will remain essential to military operations despite the pace of modern warfare and cutting-edge weaponry.

Singh said at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Strategic Infrastructure Conclave that technology, artificial intelligence and precision-guided weapons are transforming the battlefield but that strong infrastructure is still the backbone of national defence.

"Even as state-of-the-art weapons and platforms are being inducted into the defence forces to address the challenges posed by the evolving nature of warfare, ports, airfields, roads and tunnels will continue to play an indispensable role in the future," he said.

The Road to the Border Is the First Frontline

Rajnath Singh noted the significance of military logistics when he said the first battlefield usually starts long before soldiers reach the border.

"Sometimes, the first front of a war is not the border itself, it is on the road our soldiers travel on to the front line. So the person who builds that road is as vital a guardian of national security as the soldier who stands at the border," the Defence Minister said, praising the Border Roads Organisation for building strategic infrastructure in some of the most difficult terrains in the world.

He said that although wars are becoming more sophisticated with technology and precision strikes, military success is ultimately dependent on the ability to get troops, equipment and supplies to the front lines.

BRO has become a Strategic Force

Rajnath Singh said the BRO has evolved dramatically over the past six-and-a-half decades and has transformed from a road construction agency into one of the world's best-respected strategic infrastructure organisations.

He cited landmark engineering achievements such as the Atal Tunnel, Sela Tunnel and the Umling La Pass road as symbols of India's engineering excellence and the dedication of BRO personnel working in extreme weather and high-altitude conditions.

"The speed with which BRO constructs roads and highways in some of the world’s most challenging terrains is unprecedented. It shows the combined power of human determination and modern technology,” he said.

Technology Driving Infrastructure Revolution

Singh called BRO a leader in incorporating modern construction techniques and highlighted the growing use of advanced tunnelling technologies, mechanisation and digital tools in infrastructure development.

He said that connectivity is important for defence preparedness as well as economic development and national integration.

With the Centre’s Vibrant Village Programme, Singh said, the government is transforming remote border settlements, once known as the country’s “last villages,” into India’s “first villages” by extending roads, digital connectivity and public infrastructure.

"A nation with robust infrastructure is the one with a bright future. The infrastructure we are building today will define our civilisation for the next one or two centuries," he said.

Call for industry and Academia to join hands.

The Defence Minister urged industries, engineers, researchers and academic institutions to work with the government on developing the next-generation infrastructure solutions for the country.

He said the development of world-class infrastructure is a shared national responsibility and requires innovation, research and effective execution.

BRO Pushes Digital Transformation

Director General Border Roads Lt Gen. Harpal Singh said strategic capability is no longer measured by how well built but by how well planned, managed and maintained projects are.

He said BRO is promoting digital planning, AI-enabled project management, mechanisation and sustainable construction techniques and is working with industry and academia to develop future-ready infrastructure.

During the conclave, Rajnath Singh presented awards for high-quality BRO projects and launched two digital platforms for project management and recruitment. He also introduced the BRO anthem and published three publications—Path Pradarshak, Oonchi Sadken and Path Vikas—which were in light of the organisation’s achievements, innovations and future vision.

The two-day conclave brought together senior military officials, policymakers, engineers, technology experts and industry leaders to discuss emerging technologies, digital transformation and innovative engineering solutions aimed at strengthening India's strategic border infrastructure.
