Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the tragic building collapse in the city's Satya Niketan area and said “no one will be spared” if negligence is found. The statement comes as a five-storey paying guest (PG) building collapsed on Sunday and killed six people and injured several others.
The incident has reignited worry about the safety of student housing and ageing residential structures in the capital. Satya Niketan is one of Delhi’s most popular student housing hubs, and the tragedy has raised questions about PG facilities and building safety standards to be monitored.

Gupta said that when she talked about the tragedy, she said accountability would be fixed after a thorough investigation.
As Chief Minister, she will “take any lapse or negligence that contributed to this disaster very seriously.”
Emergency teams, including firefighters, police personnel and disaster response units, were in place immediately after the collapse, the police said. Rescue workers were able to pull 12 people alive away from the rubble, and search continued for others who could be trapped.
Questions Over Building Safety
The collapsed structure was reportedly around 30 years old and was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students studying at nearby colleges under Delhi University's South Campus.
The building had about 15 rooms and housed students from various states such as Kerala, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Students paid large monthly rents to stay in the accommodation.
Residents claimed that the building did not get proper maintenance for years. They say that many similar buildings in Satya Niketan serve as PG accommodation without regular structural inspections or safety inspections.
Residents also cited construction work in the basement and recurring waterlogging issues that may have weakened the building’s foundation over time. These are factors to be examined as part of the official investigation.
Citywide Inspection Drive Ordered
In the wake of the collapse, the Delhi government has apparently directed the civic agencies and district administration to conduct checks of vulnerable buildings such as hostels and PG accommodation.
The officials will review building permits, occupancy certificates, fire safety compliance and structural integrity reports. Buildings found to violate safety standards could be closed or subject to penalty or demolition proceedings.
The move comes as there is growing concern over unauthorised construction and inadequate maintenance in densely populated student areas like Satya Niketan, Mukherjee Nagar, Karol Bagh and Laxmi Nagar.
Many old buildings in such localities have long been warned that structural assessments are required when converting them into commercial student housing facilities.
Demand for Stronger Regulations
The tragedy has triggered calls for stronger regulations on PG accommodation in Delhi. Students, residents’ associations and civic activists have called for structural audits and periodic safety certifications for buildings housing large numbers of students.
Many have also called for a system of centralised registration of PG operators, to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Urban planning professionals say commercialisation of residential properties has been rapid with little oversight in so many parts of the city. They believe stronger enforcement of building codes is needed in order for things to be prevented in the future.

There is still a great deal of investigation going on as to what caused the collapse. Construction and maintenance records, renovation activities, and the environment could be factors that could have caused it; investigators are investigating.
