Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for Indiramma Housing Towers at KPHB Colony in Hyderabad on Thursday, marking a major affordable housing initiative to provide homes to economically weaker and middle-income families in the city.
The KPHB project is part of the Telangana government's larger plan of building 1 lakh affordable flats in Hyderabad. The programme has been rolled out in phases, and the first pilot has been to 12,000 homes. The government says the programme is to offer affordable housing closer to other residential areas and the main employment centres.
According to the details released for the launch, the first phase will cover 7,340 flats in 18 locations with an administrative sanction of approximately ₹807.40 crore. The flats will have a carpet area of about 400 square feet. The KPHB Colony site itself will have 480 flats, and the foundation-laying ceremony is scheduled for Thursday.
The project is based on a shared funding model. Under the scheme, the Telangana government will provide a subsidy of ₹5 lakh for each flat, and the beneficiary will contribute ₹6 lakh. Families with an annual income of up to ₹6 lakh are eligible to apply, and the scheme could be applicable to a large number of families who cannot afford to buy homes in the expensive property market in Hyderabad.
Applications for the housing scheme are now open through MeeSeva centres and will be accepted until August 15, 2026. Beneficiaries will be selected through a lottery system, and 30% reservation for women will be introduced in the selection process.
The government has stressed that the tower-based housing model will make better use of land in Hyderabad and enable beneficiaries to access homes in developed parts of the city rather than being pushed to distant peripheral areas. The KPHB development is planned on a site between KPHB Phases 7 and 9 and Gokul Flats. Four towers are proposed at the location, and the project is expected to accommodate a significant number of beneficiaries.
The larger Indiramma Housing Towers programme also arrives at a time when housing affordability has become a major concern in Hyderabad. Fast urbanisation, increasing land prices and rising demand for homes near employment hubs have made home ownership difficult for many lower- and middle-income families.
The Telangana government’s initiative aims to fill that gap with subsidised housing and transparent beneficiary selection. The lottery will help to alleviate disputes over selection, and women’s rights and access to housing ownership and protection through reservation is meant to improve women's access to housing and security.
The foundation stone ceremony at KPHB, therefore, is not only the beginning of one housing project. It is part of a larger plan to grow affordable housing stock in Hyderabad, with thousands of flats planned in the first phase and a long-term target of 1 lakh homes.
And with applications due to close on August 15, eligible families are encouraged to complete the registration process within the stipulated period. The government will proceed with beneficiary selection after this window of application closes, the government said.
