Schools in These States Closed Till January 10 Due to Severe Cold Wave

As a vicious winter storm grips northern, eastern and northeastern India, multiple state governments and district governments have ordered the closure of schools to safeguard students from temperatures dropping to freezing and fog. India Meteorological Department (IMD) alerts in several areas have extended winter breaks or issued fresh closure orders for certain districts till 10 January 2026.

States and Regions with School Closures Till January 10  

Though many states have general holidays for the winter, the next section orders holidays extending all the way towards the end of this week:

Tripura: Schools, government-aided, and private, will be closed from January 6 to January 10, 2026 at the latest according to the state, resulting from extreme cold conditions across the state.

Uttar Pradesh (Chosen Districts):

  • Noida (Gautam Buddh Nagar) & Ghaziabad: Schooling facilities for students up to Class 8 will be closed until 10 January.
  • Ghazipur: Classes 1-8 vacations declared till 10 January.

Note: In other UP districts such as Lucknow and Agra, closures are set to last until Jan. 8 but officials have indicated that further extensions are available, if fog persists.

Rajasthan (Jaipur District):

The district government has extended holidays for Pre-Primary through Class 5 school children until January 10. The holidays are shorter for students in Classes 6 to 8, ending on Jan. 8.

Delhi & Haryana:

The majority of schools in both regions have a pre-planned winter break which continues and ends on January 15, 2026.

Student and Parental Advisory Department Policy  

Education departments issued a series of instructions regarding safety and academic continuity:

Staff Attendance: In many areas (Jaipur and Jharkhand being two examples) teachers and non-teaching staff must be present to the school without delay as per school rules for administrative work whilst students are on leave.

Board Examinations: Regular practicals or pre-Board Examinations – The planned practicals or pre-board exams in Classes 10 and 12 will take hold normally as per schedules. The school will advise students that students come for examinations to wear enough woolen clothes and observe for shifts in timing by email with their schools.

Online Classes: Ghazipur and Noida district schools have been allowed to schedule the virtual classes for older students and it can avoid the learning gaps.

Health Precautions: Home parents advised to keep children indoors, early morning and late evening, when the “chill factor” is highest.

Weather Forecast: What You Will Face?  

The IMD expects more heavy to very dense fog remaining to impair visibility in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh at least for 48 hours. It is anticipated that temps in these areas will hover between 7-9°C, and cold winds will make it seem much colder.
