Bengaluru, Karnataka: Bengaluru Traffic Police launched a public awareness campaign to encourage commuters to wait at designated bus stops instead of standing on the road to avoid traffic jams, since it increases road safety.
In a report that was shared with the public, the traffic police said waiting for buses on the road rather than in designated bus bays creates bottlenecks, slows down the flow of vehicles, and increases the risk of accidents for both commuters and motorists.

The traffic police appealed, saying the public waiting on the carriageway and not on the bus stops is one of the reasons why traffic is so heavy throughout the city. Traffic police said they can also cause congestion at bus stops, too.
As part of the awareness campaign, traffic officers have been talking to commuters during peak commute times to encourage them to use the bus bays and waiting areas. The government also urges bus drivers of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses to stop only at bus stops to help ensure smooth traffic flow and better boarding for passengers.
When buses stop in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off passengers, drivers behind them are forced to slow down or change lanes abruptly, which also increases congestion and collision risk, the agency said. Proper use of bus bays allows buses to stop without obstructing traffic.
The initiative is part of Bengaluru Traffic Police’s wider road discipline drive to curb urban congestion in one of India’s busiest metropolitan cities. Police and officials are also promoting public awareness for safe road use by drivers, pedestrians and public transport users in addition to enforcement.
The traffic police have appealed to citizens to cooperate so that they just stand at bus stop areas and not on the road while waiting for buses. They also asked citizens to respect bus bays and not park or stop in these places.
These practices will prevent traffic congestion, reduce delays and create a better commuting climate for all, the officials said. The road user should feel a sense of common responsibility, they said, because they are all road users— commuters, bus operators and drivers.
The awareness campaign will continue in all major intersections and bus stops across Bengaluru, and traffic enforcement officials will inform the public about boarding at designated boarding points. More compliance will reduce congestion and the city will get a more effective public transport system.
