A heartbreaking incident has come to light from Telangana, where a young couple died by suicide after facing opposition to their inter-caste marriage. The deceased couple was Anumula Rakesh Reddy (25) and his wife Tharigoppula Harika (22).
The couple fell in love, got married and moved to Hyderabad before returning to their native village in Siddipet district three months later. But Reddy’s parents did not accept their marriage because Harika belonged to a different caste. This rejection caused severe emotional distress to the couple, according to police officials.
On March 28, Rakesh Reddy attempted to end his life by consuming pesticide. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away on March 30 while undergoing treatment. Harika felt terrible too. A little later, on April 2, she also died by suicide after she learned about her husband’s death.
Police found out that Harika had previously attempted suicide because of the stress of her marriage. After that incident, Reddy’s parents had been counselled and had reluctantly accepted the marriage. But there was still tension in the family and the couple was struggling emotionally.
The authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation. The incident has stirred up discussions about the problems faced by couples in inter-caste marriages, particularly in rural areas where traditional beliefs clash with modern values.
This tragedy shows the impact of social pressure and family opposition on young couples. Although India has made progress in promoting equality and acceptance, cases like this show that caste-based discrimination still impacts personal relationships. The emotional toll can be overwhelming, leading to irreversible consequences.
Community leaders and activists have highlighted the need for counselling, awareness and support systems to prevent such incidents. They argue that families must prioritize love and happiness over outdated social divisions.
The deaths of Rakesh Reddy and Harika are a painful reminder of the need for compassion, understanding and acceptance in society. Their story shows how intolerance can destroy lives and how urgent it is to create safe spaces for couples who choose love across caste boundaries.
