Three doctors, Dhanush, Apoorva and Avinash, were riding a scooter near Jayadeva Junction and BTM Layout, Bengaluru. All three officers did not carry a helmet and a rear pillion rider (I suspect from the picture above at all) held a liquor bottle and drank with them in motion on the scooter.

Then a video of this move spread in the social media, it was unpopular and received criticism as well from the public. Traffic police across the street from Mico Layout tracked the trio and arrested them. They were charged with:

  • Negligent riding
  • Triple riding on a two-wheeler
  • Not wearing helmets
  • Drinking alcohol in public

Doctors were booked under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and public drinking laws. At the time they were in police custody they were released on station bail. Police say the investigation is ongoing and reckless behaviour will not be tolerated.

The case underscores how dangerous it can be to just ride and drink in public places. Triple riding and helmet violations are already rampant in Indian cities but adding alcohol use makes it even more dangerous. That they were medical professionals trained and supposed to lead the country, was a surprise to many, to be honest. Their conduct has caused the debate about accountability as well as basic safety issues.

The whole phenomenon reveals the growing role that social media plays in law enforcement. Without the video (V viral game), it might have gone unnoticed. With a quick police response, evidence is being put to use on our road safety enforcement system. It also shows others in society that careless behaviour in public areas could have serious consequences.

A reminder that no one is above the law and so three Bengaluru doctors charged triple riding and drinking on the road. Road safety rules set out to keep people safe, and to violate them can make our lives worse. They all have been released on bail in the past so far, but that should be a danger, given the high level and the high public interest by professionals in India: There needs to be a greater consideration and awareness in our lives but also this is no longer something that goes on without a reason in India’s fast-paced cities.
