Members of Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) performed a 'Buddhi-Shuddhi' Yagna in Dehradun, while putting up a picture of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during the ritual. The event was held at the Panchayati Temple near the city’s Clock Tower yesterday.
The BJP members organised the ritual as a political demonstration involving Rahul Gandhi. A picture of the Congress leader was placed at the venue while the participants carried out the Yagna.
The ‘Buddhi-Shuddhi’ ritual, which broadly refers to a prayer or religious ceremony associated with purification of the mind and thoughts, was used by the BJP members as part of their protest. They took a religious setting and turned it into a political expression of one of the Congress party’s major leaders.
The event took place near the Clock Tower, one of Dehradun’s iconic landmarks and highlighted the political activity in the area. BJP people who were in the ceremony took Rahul Gandhi’s picture as their symbolic protest.
Such symbolic demonstrations have often become part of political exchanges between the BJP and Congress. Political parties frequently use public events, rituals, slogans and demonstrations to express disagreement with statements or actions by leaders of rival parties.
The Dehradun Yagna is another instance that adds to this pattern of political protest. The BJP members made their criticism visible in the ceremony by placing Rahul Gandhi’s picture in the public square in a religious theme showing off.

Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament, remains a prominent figure in national political debates.
His statements and political campaigns have regularly been met with strong responses from the BJP, and leaders and supporters of the two parties have been in heated exchanges.
The Dehradun incident is an example of how political disagreements take on more than rallies and press statements.
Religious ceremonies and symbolic gestures can also be political messaging platforms when supporters want to get people to hear their criticism.
The BJP members’ action at the Panchayati Temple thus became a visible political statement in Dehradun. The use of Rahul Gandhi’s picture in the ‘Buddhi-Shuddhi’ Yagna gave the protest a particular character and underlined the continuing political friction between the BJP and Congress.
The event also demonstrates how political supporters are communicating their positions in public space with ever more diverse methods.
While the ceremony was religious in spirit, a picture of a political leader made the gathering part of a wider political expression.
But the development comes at a time of political warfare between the BJP and Congress, as leaders and supporters of both parties frequently criticise each other in public.
