The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued weather warnings for the vast majority of India on 23 September of torrential rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds as monsoon conditions continue to affect the weather conditions in India. Residents of vulnerable areas should be encouraged to be careful and heed the local weather warning.
According to the latest predictions, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and parts of eastern and central India are expected to witness significant rainfall activity during the day. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are also likely in many parts of the country.
The widespread rain is due to a strong low-pressure system over and around the Bay of Bengal that has intensified weather activity in eastern, southern and central areas of the country. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in places of saturated soil.
Karnataka Under Rain Alert
Karnataka is one of the states that could see heavy rain in the next few days. Heavy showers are expected in some districts due to a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, IMD said. In some areas of the state, an orange alert is issued and coastal and south interior areas can expect heavy rain. Bengaluru and surrounding areas may also experience periodic rainfall accompanied by thunder and strong winds.
West Bengal Faces Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms
In eastern India, parts of West Bengal are on orange and yellow alerts as a depression over the Bay of Bengal moves closer to the coast. There is moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in a few districts, the weather service said. Residents should avoid open areas during thunderstorms and be on guard for temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, it said.
Kerala and Coastal Areas on Watch
Over the coming days, Kerala will also experience heavy rain. Weather officials have also issued alerts for several districts, and fishermen are advised not to go out into the sea due to rough weather and strong winds on the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
Thunderstorm and Wind Alerts
Apart from rain, the IMD forecast thunderstorms and strong winds in regions of the country and stated wind speeds could reach excessive levels in some places, increasing the risk of tree falls and power outages. Residents should secure loose objects and stay updated on weather forecasts.
Advisory for Residents
Weather experts advise avoiding open fields, isolated trees, water bodies and exposed locations during lightning activity. Urban residents in flood-prone areas should follow local weather advisories, while commuters need to watch for warning signs and check road and transport conditions.
With monsoon systems still active across much of the country, changing weather conditions are expected to continue in the next few days. The public should make sure to stay updated on weather conditions through IMD bulletins and local administration updates.
