The decision was approved at the BCCI's 95th Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on September 18, 2026. The General Body unanimously adopted the plan though the board has not yet disclosed the programme for the celebrations.

IPL will reach a major milestone.

The IPL began in 2008, with the first match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 18. Brendon McCullum's 158 in that opening game put the new T20 competition in the spotlight.

Since then, the league has developed to one of cricket’s top annual tournaments, drawing big international players, huge television audiences and huge commercial interest.

The 2027 season will be the 20th edition of the competition and the BCCI will be able to reflect back on the tournament and remember it.

The BCCI confirms Grand Celebration Plan.

The official BCCI statement after the AGM said the General Body had unanimously decided to celebrate the upcoming 20th IPL edition “in a grand way.”

And yet the board has not publicly revealed what kinds of celebrations will take place.

There are suggestions among fans about bigger opening ceremonies, special matches, and other commemorative events. These ideas could ultimately make it into the final programme but they should not now be reported as BCCI plans.

IPL Governing Council members elected.

The AGM also dealt with the administration of the IPL.

Arun Singh Dhumal and M Khairul Jamal Majumdar were elected and inducted as the two General Body representatives on the IPL Governing Council. Dhumal has been the chairman since 2022 while Majumdar represents the Cricket Association of Mizoram.

Their continuation is in line with BCCI going through a different phase in the league's development.

BCCI also begins Centenary Preparations.

The IPL celebration was not the only major milestone discussed at the AGM.

BCCI also announced that it had started the process for its centenary celebrations in 2028. The centenary programme will run for an entire year beginning in December 2027 and continuing through 2028, the board said.

That’s why the 2027 IPL season could be the start of a particularly significant period for Indian cricket.

Financial and Administrative Decisions.

Several other decisions were taken at the 95th AGM.

The general body adopted the BCCI's audited financial statement for the 2025-26 financial year and approved the annual budget for 2026-27.

The board also approved a revised payment structure for umpires and match referees, appointed auditors for 2026-27 and updated its Age Verification Policy.
