With his speed, grit, and determination, he won the gold medal for India, while his fellow para-sprinter Basil took the silver medal, etching their names into the annals of Indian sporting history.
Gavit, an outstanding athlete from Maharashtra, sprinted to a perfect 10.71 seconds to take the top place. This is the best record in the history of the T47 category in the Commonwealth Games. Basil also took the silver medal and crossed the line in 10.83 seconds for a perfect performance in the short-sprint race.
This great finish in Glasgow was quite a reversal of the recent domestic events between the two powerful competitors. At the 8th Indian Open International Para Athletics Championships held in Bengaluru in May 2026, Basil had won the gold medal with 10.63 seconds, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Gavit, who won the silver with 10.64 seconds. The competition between the two exceptional sprinters ultimately resulted in global glory for the two to share.
I am very proud of the fact that Gavit won gold in the 100m at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, and it is a credit to him that he is a versatile athlete who has been able to move from 100m to shorter sprints. Gavit originally built his formidable international reputation as a 400m specialist, most notably capturing a prestigious gold medal in the men's 400m T47 category at the Asian Para Games 2022. For the 21-year-old Kerala sprinter Mohammed Basil, to win a silver medal for the first time in global multi-sport will be a record.
The historic double-podium finish ensured that India's medal count grew greatly at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Gavit’s victory was the third gold medal for India at the multi-nation event and was followed by Priyanka Dhankar and weightlifting legend Mirabai Chanu as well. Basil’s podium finish was the ninth overall silver medal for India in Glasgow and just seconds after Murali Sreeshankar won a silver medal in the men’s long jump final on an unforgettable day for Indian athletics.
