Indian men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh has reportedly scored 250 goals for the senior national team another feather in his cap. The drag-flicker with powerful stick and consistency in penalty corners is one of India’s most attacking players but plays mostly as a defender.
It comes during India’s Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 campaign where they are playing against top Asian hockey sides. Harmanpreet has continued to be an important cog in the wheel of India’s performances scoring goals through penalty corners and penalty strokes.
Harmanpreet Singh's Goal-Scoring Form in Asian Champions Trophy
Harmanpreet shone against Malaysia on November 1 when he scored a hat-trick as India beat Malaysia 4–2 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.
He scored in the third, 33rd and 58th minutes of the match. Two goals came from penalty corners and the third from a penalty stroke.
The win was India’s fourth in a row in the tournament. Harmanpreet was also named Player of the Match.
He continued his goalscoring streak against South Korea on November 2 as India won 8-0 in its final league match to end the campaign.
His contributions have underlined his role in India's penalty-corner attack and overall campaign.
From Junior Hockey to Leading the Indian National Team
Harmanpreet Singh was born in Punjab on 6 January 1996 and began his international career with the Indian junior team before finding a place in senior side.
He was part of India’s gold-medal winning squad at Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2015 and Junior World Cup 2016.
His performances got him a place in the senior national team where he developed into one of the country's drag-flickers. His ability to convert penalty corners has made him an attacking option for India.
Harmanpreet was named captain of the Indian men's hockey team and led them through several major international tournaments.
Olympic Medals and Major Achievements
Harmanpreet has been part of India’s historic Olympic campaigns in recent years.
He won bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics (India ended a 41-year Olympic hockey medal drought) and then captained the team to another bronze medal in Paris 2024 Olympics.
He was also part of India's gold-medal winning campaign at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The win qualified India for Paris Olympics.
Other titles include the Asian Champions Trophy and Asia Cup; individual recognition for his performances.
Harmanpreet won the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2024 and twice won FIH Player of the Year award.
Why Harmanpreet Singh Is Important to Indian Hockey
Harmanpreet is not just a goal-scorer. He is also a defender and penalty corner specialist for India and he provides the biggest attacking threat during set pieces.
His drag-flicking ability allows India to turn penalty corners into scoring opportunities (a big part of modern international hockey).
His leadership has also been central to India’s transition between generations — experienced players and younger members contribute to the national team’s performances.
The reported 250-goal mark is evidence of his contribution to Indian hockey but as captain he will be an important figure as India fight for major international titles.
