The Indian athlete competed in a strong field that was dominated by Samuel Bennett of England, who won the heat in 13.20 seconds, and Jerome Campbell of Jamaica, who came second in 13.33 seconds. Shirse kept his cool over the final hurdle and secured third place and a place in the medal race.
Shirse entered the Commonwealth Games in great form. By the end of this season he was one of Asia’s greatest hurdlers, breaking the Indian national record and winning the national title. His consistency in the year made him one of India’s strongest medal candidates in track and field going to Glasgow.
Shirse qualifying for the final is yet another important step in the rising star that has been Shirse. His performance has been consistently very good in India over the years in national and international events, and he is currently India's top hurdler in 110m. His technical progression, his speed in the hurdles, and his consistency have allowed him to make up the gap on some of the world’s most capable athletes.
Men’s 110m hurdles is one of athletics’ most demanding sprint events as athletes need to take a shot at athletic speed and hurdling skills to win on ten barriers while also being able to execute them very well. Even a slight error is costly, and qualification to make it to a major international final is a big achievement.
Shirse's qualification is another opportunity for India to contend for a medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games. Indian athletes have historically dominated field events, but sprint hurdles have been somewhat less successful. A strong performance in the final would therefore be an important achievement for Indian track athletics.
Athletics is still one of the big events at the Commonwealth Games and athletes from all over the Commonwealth are battling for podium places. India’s athletics team will try to keep their medals going and contribute to the country’s medal total at the Games.
All eyes are now on the men's 110m hurdles final, where Tejas Shirse will be able to perform another fast run against an elite field of athletes. Having already overcome the qualification hurdle, India's star will be hoping to bring out the best performance when medals are on the line.
