Lovepreet Singh is a world class weightlifter in the men's +110kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with the silver medal at the heart of it all. The final was nail-biting and the fans were glued to the action as Lovepreet set a Commonwealth Games record for the snatch event. But in a very unfortunate twist of fate he just missed out on gold by one kilogram, behind New Zealand's great weightlifter David Andrew Liti in a thriller.
The 28-year-old from Amritsar, Punjab, opened the medal contest in dominant fashion. Lovepreet performed three flawless, consecutive successful lifts in the snatch round. His weight mark of 176 kilograms set a new Commonwealth Games record and he established a 10 kg lead on his closest competitor Liti (166kg) in the first attempt.
Lovepreet was able to withstand the pressure in the clean and jerk as he managed to reach 212 kilograms and finished with a total of 388 kilograms. That was better than his previous personal best of 386 kilograms, which he had achieved earlier in the season in selection trials.
Despite Lovepreet’s dominant total, the super-heavyweight division made a huge comeback. Liti was struggling after the snatch, and he dug deep during the clean and jerk round. On his last try, the New Zealander lifted 223kg, a Games-record weight for him. That one huge effort took his total to 389kg and then he was able to pass the Indian lifter by a single kilogram and win the gold medal in the last seconds. Meanwhile, Andrew Griffiths of England was also able to win the bronze medal with a total of 356kg weight in the snatch and clean and jerk category, 165kg for the snatch and 191kg for the clean and jerk.
Lovepreet’s medal-winning performance in Glasgow is a testament to his tactical growth. After the move from the 109kg category (his bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022) into the heavier +110kg category, he has certainly proved his mettle among international super-heavyweights. India is currently the ninth country winning weightlifting and para-weightlifting medals in the Glasgow Games, and its position in strength sports is only going to rise.
