IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Cancelled: BCCI Decision After Bengaluru Stampede

With almost two days left until the start of the Indian Premier League 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made some very surprising and close decisions. There will be no opening ceremony at all this year.

The 2026 IPL will kick off on March 28 at the famous M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will play against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the opening match at 7:30 PM. IPL seasons traditionally open with a Grand Opening ceremony (like in IPL season 2020), but this year will be different as the start will be at 8:50 PM.

Why is the opening ceremony canceled?

The BCCI decided to cancel the opening ceremony in Bengaluru following a recent tragic incident in Bengaluru during RCB’s victory parade after they won their IPL title for the first time in 2025. A stampede occurred, resulting in the deaths of 11 people, in addition to other RCB players attending that day’s celebrations.

Various reports, including The Times of India, have cited that this decision should be appreciated as an act to honor the loss of citizens in tragic incidents at the site in Jaipur. Thus, there is a shift from happiness to sensitivity towards pain and grief.

Focus on cricket in Bengaluru Opener

Although there will be no opening ceremony, there is a lot of excitement about this tournament. The first match-up between RCB and SRH is expected to be the main attraction as Bengaluru hosts its first match of the season (July 2016).

The fans are eager for the IPL action - the overall situation when we see the intensity of the start is subdued this year.

Closing Ceremony Still Likely

While the opening ceremony has been canceled, it seems that the closing ceremony might continue on May 31. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has even suggested the formation of a grand finale ceremony by the tournament's end.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time that the IPL opening ceremony has been canceled. In 2019, the ceremonies to pay tribute to 40 CRPF personnel who lost their lives in the Pulwama attack were scrapped. Funds allocated for that purpose have now been handed over to the families of the victims.

By contrast, the previous IPL edition had a big opening ceremony in Kolkata with celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Disha Patani, and Karan Aujla at the center.

A Season with a different beginning.

IPL 2026 will begin on a more solemn note, with respect for memory over glamour. While fans will miss the entertainment spectacle, the show should focus more on what the league has learned, as they have never been as bad at that, as that of showmanship and not just sports.
