Portugal began their 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign with a narrow 1–0 win over Wales on Thursday 24 September 2026. João Félix scored the only goal in the game as Portugal started their title defence with three points at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.
The result also gave new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus a winning start in the Nations League. UEFA confirmed Portugal's 1–0 victory over Wales in the opening round of League A, Group A4.
João Félix breaks the deadlock
Portugal dominated the early action and eventually made the breakthrough in the 22nd minute.
João Félix finished a move with Nuno Mendes to put Portugal ahead. His effort proved to be the difference between the two teams, with Wales not able to equalise in the final minutes.
Sky Sports also confirmed Félix’s 22nd minute goal as the match winner.
Portugal Dominate Possession and Chances
The hosts made a few chances throughout the match, and kept pressure on the Welsh defence.
According to match statistics reported by Sofascore, Portugal finished with 61% possession and had 23 shots compared to five from Wales. Portugal had a clear advantage in expected goals, but the final score was 1–0.
Despite creating chances, Portugal could not add a second goal and had to stay alert in the final stages.
Ronaldo Fails to Score
Cristiano Ronaldo started the match for Portugal but was unable to find the net.
The veteran forward had a number of chances, but one second half goal was ruled out for offside. Sky Sports reported that Ronaldo finished the match without scoring despite seven shots.
Portugal had to rely on Félix’s first-half goal to win.
Wales Push for an Equaliser
Wales tried to respond after falling behind and became more adventurous as the match went on.
Portugal, though, held on to their narrow advantage. The Welsh side were close to scoring in the final few minutes of the match, but the hosts went on to win all three points.
The win gives Portugal a good early edge in the League A Group A4 and Wales also start with a defeat. UEFA confirms the 1–0 score and September 24 date in UEFA's official match records.
